Video: Antony’s embarrassing reaction to Erik ten Hag’s tactical instructions in loss vs. Arsenal emerges

by Derick Kinoti

A shocking video emerged on social media after Manchester United’s loss against Arsenal, in which Antony is seen angrily reacting to tactical instructions from Erik ten Hag.

United were beaten 1-0 on Sunday at Old Trafford. Leandro Trossard grabbed the only goal of the fixture.

The surprise personnel change in Ten Hag’s starting XI selection was Amad Diallo. Amad was deployed in his favoured right-wing position in an attacking line also consisting of Alejandro Garnacho on the opposite channel and Rasmus Hojlund leading the line.

Amad justified his inclusion. He was undoubtedly United’s best performer during the time he was on the pitch.

He won all his tackles and successfully delivered all the long balls he tried to find his teammates with. The Ivorian was also brilliant whenever he embarked on dribbles and attempted to take on his man.

Unfortunately, his participation in the match was cut short with 20 minutes of regular time left on the clock with what seemed like an injury. He had to be taken off and Antony was introduced into the proceedings in his place. Unsurprisingly, Antony didn’t offer much but it’s an incident which occurred during the game that particularly irked fans.

In the dying embers of the game, Ten Hag made a bold move as he decided to make a triple attacking change. He brought on Christian Eriksen, Omari Forson and Ethan Wheatley. This forced the Dutch coach to adjust his tactics and positioning of the players.

Ten Hag resorted to instructing Antony to assume an unorthodox left-back role. This did not go down well with the Brazilian, who reluctantly trudged over to that part of the pitch but only after captain of the day Scott McTominay approached him and urged him to do so quickly.

Eriksen also joined in to encourage Antony to heed the manager’s instructions.

The footage also shows the 24-year-old winger pointing at his head and flapping his arms about while seemingly angry and questioning Ten Hag’s decision to put him at left-back. Antony then covers his mouth and shares a word with fellow countryman Gabriel Jesus.

This is not the first time Antony has lashed out when asked to temporarily fill in at left-back. He did the same thing in the dramatic 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final win vs. Liverpool in March.

For a player who has been nothing short of embarrassing this season, it’s startling that Antony would still have the cheek to publicly question the boss and publicly express his disagreement, particularly when United are chasing the game.

It’s another example of why he should be one of the first names out the door as soon as the summer transfer window commences. He neither has the ability nor mentality required to play for a club like United.
