Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite has responded to the rumours suggestions he could be on his way out of Goodison Park this summer, even as he continues to be strongly linked with a transfer to Manchester United.
United are plotting to recruit defensive reinforcements ahead of the summer window.
This term, Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff have had to contend with injuries to multiple key defenders. The club is currently dealing with an injury crisis, with Harry Maguire and Willy Kambwala the only fit senior centre-backs available for selection. The pair started against Liverpool during Sunday’s 2-2 draw.
Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are all recovering from different physical setbacks and are not expected back soon.
The sidelining of members of the backline has played a big part in hindering the Red Devils from nailing down a consistent run of performances and results this term.
Varane and Evans are approaching the final months of their respective deals at Old Trafford and both players are set to walk away as free agents when the season concludes, unless they can agree fresh terms with the club.
It has also been suggested that Lindelof and Maguire could be made available for sale in case United were to receive enticing offers for either player.
A combination of all these factors makes it easy to see why United are on the hunt for centre-back additions.
One of the players said to be high on the 20-time English champions’ wish list is Branthwaite. The England international’s football has risen considerably this campaign and it seems like he’s set for a big move in the coming months.
United are not the only party keen on securing his services. Newcastle and Manchester City are also thought to be admirers of his.
Branthwaite has been a standout star for the Toffees, during a season that has been plagued with on-the-pitch and off-the-pitch troubles.
The 21-year-old spoke to reporters after his side’s 1-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday and addressed speculation surrounding his future.
He said, “You have just got to block it all out.”
“I think if you focus on the outside stuff, you get distracted from what you need to do on the pitch.”
“For me now, until the end of the season, I am just focussed on winning games for Everton Football Club.”
Branthwaite has made 34 appearances across all competitions for Everton this season. He has helped the Merseyside outfit keep 11 clean sheets. He has also scored two goals.
