Mason Greenwood has been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. The latest statement from the Greater Manchester Police reads as follows:

“Detectives have been granted further additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

“The suspect was detained in custody on Sunday (30 January) afternoon after we became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. He continues to be questioned after magistrates authorised an extension until tomorrow (Wednesday 2 February).

“Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. Enquiries are ongoing and the victim continues to be offered specialist support.

“We remind people to avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim’s right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings.”

This is the latest update from the Greater Manchester Police following Greenwood’s initial arrest after images, a video and audio file surfaced on social media at the weekend.

Manchester United have confirmed Greenwood will not train with the club, while Nike have ended their sponsorship affiliation with the young English forward.

We must remind readers to listen to the advice from Greater Manchester Police and not share any of the images or videos which surfaced on social media as this is an ongoing investigation.

We expect there to be an update from Manchester United in due course when there are further developments.

There is always a nervous tension going into the Manchester derby but the clouds looming over Old Trafford are darker than usual, ready to burst and rain fury down on Manchester United at any moment.

The circumstances surrounding the future of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are like a boa constrictor slowly squeezing its prey in what has been touted as a stay of execution by many, and the blade is being sharpened ahead of kick-off on Saturday at 12.30pm.

Not for one second am I enjoying any of it. None. Man United’s incompetence at board level, and a lack of planning for what’s next, is the reason Solskjaer remains in charge. It’s not because they want to give him another chance, it is because they do not know what to do after he leaves and that indecision is hanging Solskjaer out to dry.

United haven’t lost to City in the last four derbies and there is some solace to be taken in that. On more than one occasion under Ole, United have turned up in a game where few expected anything and taken it by storm. We’re all hoping for a similar outcome on Saturday but the realists in us all are expecting something far more sinister.

This could be Solskjaer’s last hurrah. His final stand with one bullet left in his pistol at the end of a Western, his redemption moment to grasp victory from the jaws of sacking. It could also be a brutal curtain close.

There is a widespread consensus that Ole had to prove himself in the three games after Spurs to ‘save his job’, one I disagree with, but after momentum faded in the Atalanta match the writing is on the wall surrounding his job.

Going into Saturday there will be a nervous air around watching United play City but it is ultimately a side story to the unfolding Shakespearian tragedy with Solskjaer as the protagonist, and rarely does a Shakespeare have a happy ending.

I really hope my feelings going into the derby are melancholy, without substance, unnecessary fear, but I don’t think it is.

I’ve been rewatching all the James Bond’s this week ahead of watching No Time To Die and the title track for Spectre feels hauntingly appropriate to listen to while writing this because the writing is indeed on the wall for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After the 5-0 humbling against Liverpool, Solskjaer could have been sacked but the club stood by him but the three following games were labelled as a stay of execution by many. If that was indeed the case, then what we saw against Atalanta was the curtain being closed.

Cristiano Ronaldo is incredible, his goals were incredible and he’s almost single handedly kept United in the Champions League but the performance was just as important for Solskjaer in current circumstances.

The 3-0 against Tottenham Hotspur gave him a glimmer of hope. A new formation, a new organisation to the team and defence, United played well in and out of possession. There was a hint of momentum to grab onto and you could feel that going into the Atalanta game.

And then it quickly faded.

The same patterns and problems that have marred United’s horribly inconsistent performances were once again on show and United once again looked all at sea. For me, that is why the writing is now on the wall.

These three games post Liverpool had to be the building of a new look United, a different outfit to what we’ve seen this season if Solskjaer is to be allowed one more true chance. We failed, Solskjaer failed. Against Atalanta, all the problems came back almost immediately and the cycle repeated itself.

I take zero pleasure in writing these words, I truly don’t, but United have now reached the crescendo with Solskjaer and I don’t see any other ending than Ole being replaced. His final act? It will most likely be Manchester City on Saturday.

Manchester United fans rejoiced when news broke of Ed Woodward resigning. It was like spotting the wicked witch’s red slippers underneath the fallen house in Oz.

But alas, here we are in November discussing Woodward’s influence over whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be sacked or not with new stories emerging suggesting Ole remains in the job at least in part to protect Woodward from a bruised ego.

Now your first reaction might be to scoff at the notion that a departing Chief Executive could retain that much control, but then you’ll remember that this is Woodward. His second name may as well be Glazer and nothing can be ruled out.

After all, if Woodward is prepared to hire Neil Ashton as his own PR adviser then he is prepared to do just about anything to protect his own self-righteous image. I bet he’s got a cardboard cut-out of himself in his walk-in closet.

If Solskjaer is sacked, it will be the final decision that Woodward got wrong and he has already got a repertoire of those to shame himself by.

So, it’s a more than feasible notion this is his last stand, protecting Solskjaer, so he can walk away and say it wasn’t him who lit the fire.

The fact Woodward’s name is still mentioned in any sort of position of power is damning enough of United’s board structure, that is precisely what we hoped the appointment of John Murtough would change.

Decisions at United from here on need to be made with the football club’s best intentions at heart rather than protecting the bruised egos of corporate men who have failed in the footballing world.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces the press on Friday ahead of Manchester United’s game against Tottenham Hotspur and it’ll be the first time he speaks to the media since the 5-0 defeat against Liverpool.

For a lot of Man United fans, it is going to be a significant moment to see how Solskjaer reacts after what has been a tumultuous week.

Monday saw widespread reports Solskjaer was facing the sack, only for Tuesday to see a U-turn that Solskjaer had been retained support of the board.

Since, it has emerged Solskjaer has been given three games to save his job, while separate reports say sacking is a possibility if United lose to Spurs, and the changing narrative around his future has created a uniquely hostile and unpredictable atmosphere ahead of his Spurs press conference.

I feel there’s a fair comparison to be made with how Steve Bruce felt ahead of Newcastle’s game against, funnily enough, Spurs, when he had to face the press after a week of constant coverage that his sacking was inevitable following Newcastle’s takeover.

That day, Bruce lashed out at the press who said he was going to be sacked before the Spurs game.

“I hope you guys are getting a slap from your bosses, whoever your source was, whoever’s feeding you, didn’t get it right,” Bruce said in bullish fashion.

I’m not expecting a similarly prickly response from Solskjaer but it’s a tough situation he faces this afternoon and it’ll be very interesting to see what questions he is asked and his reaction.

I’ve gone as far as to say I do not think these next three games matter at all for Solskjaer’s future. I think the club are hanging him out to dry in the same way Barcelona hung Ronald Koeman out to dry because the board didn’t have a plan for what was next.

I doubt Ole will or should see it that way but with a divided dressing room, a divided board above him and a divided fanbase below him, it truly feels an almost impossible task for Solskjaer to navigate his way through this and that’s why his press conference is a significant one.

Ronald Koeman was sacked by FC Barcelona on Wednesday night following their defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

There were questions as to whether Barcelona would sack Koeman but the Spanish club decided to act and sack their former player and club legend after continued poor performances and results.

Xavi is being lined up as the likely replacement and contacts have already been made by Barcelona.

These new developments only put further pressure on Man United’s board to act decisively and sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer immediately.

Barcelona had their contingency plan of Xavi, acted in sacking Koeman – a club legend – and are now in contact with Xavi’s representatives to get him in as manager as soon as possible. That’s what clubs and businesses do, they have contingency plans for their ‘what if’ scenarios and they act on them when they are needed.

Not at Manchester United.

We are currently building out our contingency plan now so instead of having it when we need it, the club has given Solskjaer another three games to give them time in what is accurately described as a stay of execution.

United fans and journalists alike will call into question how Barcelona can act while United sit back and the pressure on United’s board to act has been cranked up another few notches.

This is not a witch hunt and this is not on Solskjaer either.

If United had a contingency plan, Solskjaer would have already been sacked and replaced because we got past the point of no return after Liverpool. There is no shame in admitting that, it is the truth at this stage.

Instead, fans feel like Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar – banging on the wall, screaming for the right thing to happen with our voices falling on deaf ears while United’s board do nothing.

The gaze of United fans is firmly fixed on United’s board, the root of the problems, because their indecision has now left Ole in an untenable position and the club will suffer as a consequence.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seemed certain to be sacked by Manchester United on Monday following widespread reports his job was under threat from every reliable source.

Unexpectedly, everything changed on Tuesday morning following confirmation Solskjaer would be staying as Man United manager and the whole situation just sums up the chaos that lies behind closed doors at one of the biggest football clubs in the world.

Manchester United? No, Manchester disunited.

We’ve been told Sir Alex Ferguson rallied and led the vocal support for Solskjaer to be given another chance at United. He rallied, was present at Carrington and led the argument for Ole to have the next three games to prove himself. But, it isn’t hard to see the truth of what has really happened here.

Ole hasn’t been given another chance. It is the opposite. If United’s board weren’t so divided over Antonio Conte, he would already be United’s manager.

The fact of the matter is that United simply had no plan for Solskjaer to fail, not after giving him a new contract in the summer, so they had no plan for who his replacement could be and that is why Ole has been given another three games – to give the board time to figure this out.

Regardless of results against Spurs, Atalanta and Man City, Solskjaer will be sacked.

It is a death by a thousand cuts, the torturous kind, that Solskjaer has been given and it is because of the incompetence of United’s board. If his replacement had already been found, Solskjaer would already be sacked.

I’m just hoping the players will rally over the next three games for Solskjaer and give him the send-off he truly deserves but the odds are against him.

The dressing room is now divided, the fanbase are divided and the board is divided after everything that happened against Liverpool on Sunday and what has happened and been reported since.

Solskjaer faces an implausible, almost impossible, situation and that is purely down to the incompetence that still remains at board level inside United. Chaos indeed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to be sacked today by Manchester United after all the developments around his future on a turbulent Monday.

Following the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool, Solskjaer’s future was pulled into question but we all questioned whether Man United as a club would act.

Instead, Richard Arnold, United’s managing director, cancelled all appointments to hold a meeting with Joel Glazer. Following on from that, the Manchester Evening News reported United were considering sacking Solskjaer.

Further reports from The Telegraph and BBC re-affirmed Solskjaer was fighting for his job amid further reports that Ole had lost trust inside the dressing room. It was all unravelling.

And today is significant. Following defeats on Sunday to Everton and Liverpool respectively, both David Moyes and Jose Mourinho were sacked by United.

Everything we have seen over the last 36 hours suggests the same thing will happen with Solskjaer and that is why we expect the same to happen today if history will indeed repeat itself.

There is of course a chance that things take longer because it is Solskjaer and the credit he has indeed built up but the facts can’t be ignored anymore that, as great a job as he has done in certain aspects over the last three years, he isn’t the manager capable of getting United back to the top on the pitch and we can all admit that now.

The longer United leave it going for without sacking Solskjaer at this stage, the messier it will become and there is something I have to mention here.

Watching some United fans celebrate the last 24 hours has been pretty horrible. I won’t for a second celebrate what I am seeing happen with Solskjaer, even if I do feel it is the correct decision by the club, and for the life of me I will never understand those who are taking any sort of enjoyment out of watching what is happening with Ole.

We will bring you all the latest updates as and when they happen but as I’ve explained here, if United are to follow in the footsteps of sacking Solskjaer like they did with Moyes and Mourinho, then it seems today will be the day.

Can it get any worse than being humiliated 5-0 against Liverpool at Old Trafford? Honestly, I’m not sure it does.

Manchester United’s dismantling at the hands of Liverpool was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me personally with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and I now cannot see how he isn’t sacked as manager. Admitting that is painful.

I wanted nothing more than to see Solskjaer succeed.

His position as United boss has always been scrutinised from before he even took over as caretaker manager but time and time again he defied those odds, he came back from the brink multiple times, he regenerated, but this Liverpool defeat was all encapsulating and returning from this brink seems unlikely, verging on impossible.

The manner of the performance against Liverpool was important for Solskjaer. If we went down fighting after a full throttle team display, we could have all held our hands up and admitted Liverpool were the better team.

Instead, we were 3-0 down with 38 minutes and 4-0 down before half-time. Instead, United were lost at sea with no captain to steer them in the right direction. Ill discipline and defensive capitulation were inside the treasure chests, there was no gold in sight.

And that’s why I can’t see how Solskjaer survives this situation.

It was an all-encompassing defeat from start to finish past Bruno Fernandes’ miss within five minutes which showed me Solskjaer’s grip on this United squad wasn’t there any more. Where players previously turned up for their manager under pressure, they had no answer against the sheer quality of top level opposition in Liverpool.

It hurts me to watch it. Solskjaer is my favourite ever United player.

I grew up as a substitute in my team when I was a young kid, I looked up to Solskjaer. He gave everything to United as a player and coach for over a decade, he is United through and through, he wants nothing more than success for our club but he’s just not capable of bringing it.

I didn’t want it to end this way.

I never wanted to be in this position saying it but I have to now hold my hands up, as a staunch and fierce supporter of Solskjaer over the years, to say he has to be replaced as United manager because it’s past the point of no return now.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future as Manchester Untied manager is delicately poised ahead of Sunday’s clash against Liverpool but make no mistake – that game has a significant role to play.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed what all Man United fans are feeling going into the game; what happens on Sunday will have a direct impact on whether Solskjaer keeps his job or not.

And whether it is fair or not for Solskjaer, the performance from United on Sunday against Liverpool is equally as important as the result in terms of setting the right tone.

A comeback from 2-0 down against Atalanta to win 3-2 in the Champions League was sensational and abysmal at the same time.

An abysmal first 45 minutes was shadowed by the quality of the comeback but it won’t be forgotten and that’s why the performance against Liverpool is so crucial.

Solskjaer can ill afford to let Liverpool dominate possession at Old Trafford and simply aim to hit on the counter-attack occasionally.

Of course, the result is everything but a game like Villareal only compounded questions over Ole’s future, despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s stoppage time winner, and that’s why a good performance is crucial on Sunday.

One thing is for sure after Atalanta though – Solskjaer is not finished.

The players turned up for their manager when so many were stood by his grave throwing dirt in and pulled him back from the brink.

It’s the closest he’s been to the end but it isn’t the first time he’s been pulled back from the edge by his players and what fans now need to see is something different.

This cannot be the beginning of the boom/bust cycle that has plagued Solskjaer’s progress.

Now, and it begins with Liverpool, United need to exert a new style and dominance that befits the shirt the players wear if calls for him to be sacked are to be muted.

If Sunday doesn’t bring that and brings more of what we saw against Leicester, his position as 100% safe as far as the club is concerned will surely shift just as Fabrizio Romano suggests it will.
