Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal at Old Trafford to all but dash the Reds’ hopes of Europa League qualification through a league finish.

A Leandro Trossard goal in the 20th minute of proceedings was all it took to seal United’s fate and pile further misery on Erik ten Hag and his players.

United had the lion’s share of possession (55%) compared to Arsenal (45%).

The Red Devils registered just two shots on target from their total 14 cracks at goal. The Gunners on the other hand had 11 total shots, with five of these requiring Andre Onana to swing into action.

Ten Hag’s men put together 513 passes with a pass completion rate of 86%. Meanwhile, Arsenal strung 430 passes with a success rate of 83%.

One of United’s better performers was Amad Diallo. The forward was the surprise inclusion in Ten Hag’s starting XI, with many expecting Antony or the just-returned Marcus Rashford to be given the nod instead.

During the time he was on the pitch, Amad successfully won all the two tackles he put in.

The Ivorian also found his intended target with all two of the long balls he pinged. The winger delivered 23 of the 25 passes he attempted, registering an individual ass accuracy of 92%.

He won six of the 13 ground duels he delved into.

Amad completed three of the five dribbles he embarked on – the most of any player on the pitch. He also created two chances.

Unfortunately for Amad, he picked up an injury in the 68th minute which forced him off.

However, he still made his point to Ten Hag that he deserved significantly more playing time going forward – at least ahead of someone like Antony.

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has shockingly claimed that some of the injured players currently on the club’s payroll are fit enough to play but are seemingly choosing not to due to their own selfish reasons.

Rooney spoke on Sky Sports after United suffered a 1-0 loss at the hands of Arsenal. A 20th-minute Leandro Trossard goal was enough to sink the Red Devils and pile further misery on Erik ten Hag and his players.

The result was United’s 14th defeat of the season, adding to a total of 19 losses across all competitions – the highest in a single campaign for United since the 1977/78 campaign.

On multiple occasions this term, Ten Hag has attributed United’s misfortunes to the team’s injury crisis.

United have reported more than 60 instances of players missing games due to illness or injury.

At the moment, the likes of Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Mason Mount and Anthony Martial are currently sidelined or not yet fully match-fit to line up for the club.

However, according to Rooney (via The Express), some of these mentioned players are using the injury excuse as just a way of skipping fixtures in favour of preparing for the upcoming Wembley FA Cup final or the 2024 European Championships.

If Rooney’s words are anything to go by, some of the players saying they’re injured are lying about their fitness.

The former England international said, “Some of these players have to look at themselves because when your manager is doing an interview and talking about attitudes not being right to play for Manchester United, that is a massive insult.”

“If I saw my manager saying that, there’s no way I’d let that ride until the end of the season. And it looks like some players are just trying to get to the end of the season. And that’s my personal opinion.”

Sky presented David Jones asked Rooney whether the player are not playing for Ten Hag anymore.

United’s record goalscorer added, “If they are then they’re not showing it very well. There’s some very good players in that squad and their performances are way below par.”

“As we look at the injuries they’ve picked up, some of those players can play. Some of those players can play, 100 per cent.”

Jones retorted, “That’s quite a big claim that, you’re saying some Manchester United players who we’re not seeing out there now are fit enough to play?”

Rooney replied, “It’s easy when you’ve got a European Championships and FA Cup Final coming up, it’s easy because they’re getting a little bit of stick to stay out of it and come back towards the final. You’ve seen it, I’ve seen it over the years.”

“I just think the players that have been ‘injured’, they’re not filling themselves with any credit.”

All attention for United now shifts towards their Wednesday clash against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.

Manchester United crashed to yet another home defeat as they fell 0-1 to league leaders Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Despite a somewhat promising start, United found themselves a goal down halfway through the first half, after being sliced open for what feels the thousandth time this season.

The Red Devils did huff and puff in the Manchester rain but they never really looked like finding an all-important equaliser.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS after the game, Erik ten Hag once again failed to realise how far his team is behind the cream of the Premier League.

For what feels like the umpteenth time in this campaign Ten Hag seemingly watched a different game from the rest of us.

“We have seen, we were very competitive with Arsenal, one of the best teams in the league with City and the momentum, fighting for the league. We have seen we were on the same level across the game.”

The United coach then blamed his team’s scarcely believable injury crisis and claimed this positive performance was also in the context of his side “missing seven out of eleven potentially starting players”.

Despite the shambolic defending by Casemiro for Arsenal’s winner, Ten Hag defended his player, shockingly stating the Brazilian showed his ability to play at centre back in this game.

“He can do that. Monday night was not his night but it was a collectively poor performance. He can play there and today he was at the right level. He’s a winner. He hates to lose, he needs to bring that to the team and that is what we expect of him.”

Looking ahead to the next game, the former Ajax coach claimed, “I want to have the same attitude, that is what we have to learn from the lesson of Palace. We need always to have the spirit we had today. The players took responsibility, that is what we expect of them in every game.”

Whilst the performance was an improvement from Monday night’s mauling, this should not be an acceptable showing by a United side at Old Trafford.

Yes, there are numerous injuries and yes they were playing a very strong Arsenal side. But whilst the manager continues to spread such false statements to the fanbase, it does nothing but damage his already torn to pieces credibility.

With two games remaining, European football looks a distant dream at this stage as the challenges of Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion still stand on the horizon.

First up is the Magpies on Wednesday night in a game that could finish off the Red Devils’ chances of reaching the Europa League via the Premier League for good.

Manchester United produced a limp display against a nervous Arsenal side who were far from impressive to end up losing their Premier League game by a goal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The visitors scored from yet another mistake from Casemiro who was slow to push up which allowed Kai Havertz to cross to Leandro Trossard to score.

United remain eighth and have now lost 19 games this season, the most since 1978/79 season and these include nine defeats at home, the joint-most in any of their seasons.

The Brazilian was at fault for most of the goals against Crystal Palace last week and question marks were raised about his dropping standards.

Casemiro at fault again

Former skipper Roy Keane even suggested that an academy player would be better than playing the former Real Madrid superstar in an unfamiliar role. And judging from the huge mistake, it would have been a better call.

The Brazil international is not the same force he was last season and this makeshift role is clearly eroding his confidence further and a parting of ways in the summer is expected.

Manager Erik ten Hag’s tactical deviation saw the team staying compact and defending in a low block rather than their usual high-transition chaos ball and it seemed to be a form of damage limitation after what transpired at Selhurst Park.

Sofyan Amrabat dropped deep to act as the third centre-back at times while Scott McTominay covered a lot of space which allowed Casemiro to progress with the ball and gave more cushion for his lapses.

But this shift in approach should have come quite a few games ago, especially considering the amount of injuries the team has suffered. It could have been the difference between the manager staying in the job or not.

Maybe this change was necessitated due to the game being against a team who are at the top of the league but if he had tweaked things earlier, the team could have come out on top in certain games or at worst, avoided some painful losses.

Happy with a 0-1 loss

The only issue was that this safety-first approach and injuries really affected the attack. The 20-time English league champions struggled without the creativity of Bruno Fernandes and due to Rasmus Hojlund’s inability to play well with his back to goal.

Alejandro Garnacho was too profligate again as the hosts only had two shots on target as preferred keeping the ball and playing it amongst themselves rather than take any risks even with the clock ticking down.

Even when Mikel Arteta’s team were looking like they were there for the taking, United remained timid and it always seemed like they were happy to have kept the damage down.

Most fans will be happy with a 0-1 loss considering how the season has unfolded. And with two more games left in the league, and keeping the FA Cup final against Manchester City in mind, the manager should keep playing this style in order to prevent major embarrassments.

Manchester United fell to a 14th defeat of the Premier League season losing to Arsenal 0-1 at Old Trafford.

A first half goal by Leandro Trossard was enough to grab a vital three points and condemn United to another loss.

As the rain poured down in Manchester, the Red Devils trudged off the pitch knowing European football looks to be slipping away in the rear view mirror.

United huffed and puffed but ultimately couldn’t lay a glove on the Gunners, who looked like they never really got out of second gear.

One man who is acutely aware of how standards have fallen at Old Trafford is former captain Roy Keane.

Speaking to Sky Sports as a pundit, Keane admitted Arsenal deserved to win but he expressed once again his displeasure from what his former team served up.

“The disappointment for me in the last half an hour was United. Arsenal have come to Old Trafford over the years and found it difficult, but I bet Arsenal couldn’t believe how bad United were.”

The Red Devils had 55% possession and took 14 shots at the Gunners’ goal but despite the statistics, United never really threatened the league leaders.

“Whatever bits of possession they had, the end product and lack of quality – you talk about the great teams United had over the years, the players they’ve had. That last half an hour, decision-making, nobody digging anybody out, making mistakes, falling over, not putting demands on each other.”

“That United team there… they’re so bad.”

Commenting on Trossard’s goal Keane lambasted the Mancunian side’s defensive effort.

“It sums up United. They are obviously disjointed, there is no belief in what they are trying to do.”

The Irishman honed in on Casemiro once again for his poor play that was highlighted in the lackadaisical way he was caught well behind his side’s offside trap that gifted Kai Havertz a chance to create Arsenal’s winner.

“It’s a 15 yard sprint. He must see it. Jonny (Evans) doesn’t do enough either.”

Keane also lambasted United for not even doing the basics right. Keane lamented, “I was getting really frustrated, I couldn’t believe what I was watching, so poor. We have been repeating ourselves all year. Schoolboy stuff.”

Ten Hag’s men now must pick themselves up once again when they welcome fellow Europa League spot chasers Newcastle to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

As water flowed off the leaking Old Trafford roof it was a stark reminder of the rebuilding job both on and off the pitch that now awaits INEOS to turn this side into a team who can truly compete at the highest level of English and European football.

Manchester United exhibited a severe lack of creativity and drive as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday.

From the start of the match, it was the away team that appeared to be in the driving seat, dictating the flow of play as Man United appeared content to sit back and allow the match to unfold according to Arsenal’s will.

Unfortunately, it was the off-form Casemiro who once again proved to be at the heart of United’s problems as their dismal form as of late continued.

Of his several errors, Casemiro’s worst moment of the match came in the 20th minute, when Arsenal grabbed the only goal of the match. While the Brazilian had dropped far behind the rest of the United defence, he somehow was unable to track back in time to mark Leandro Trossard.

As Kai Havertz made his way into the box, Andre Onana had little choice other than to cover him as he laid the ball off to Trossard, who slotted the ball into the abandoned net. Had Casemiro been more alert, this situation may not have unfolded.

In his new position at centre-back, the Brazilian made three tackles and three clearances. He did not, however, make any interceptions nor block any shots.

One of the more positive aspects of his performance was that he was never dribbled past.

Probably Casemiro’s shining moment in defence was when Gabriel Martinelli weaved his way past the United defence near the final whistle. While he appeared to be on goal, Casemiro stopped Martinelli in his tracks, putting out a leg and tackling his fellow Brazilian to extinguish the danger.

Casemiro’s passing game was respectable, completing 66 of 81 attempted passes for an 81% passing accuracy. His long balls left a lot to be desired, with only six of the 15 finding their target, while both of his attempted crosses were inaccurate.

He also proved strong on the ball, winning seven of his eight total duels.

On the attack, Casemiro had a fair amount of involvement, particularly when compared to his teammates.

In the second half, Casemiro took a shot from distance that the Arsenal keeper saved. Disappointingly, this was only United’s first accurate shot of the match. He also had one of his shots blocked.

Ultimately, it was another poor performance from an ageing Casemiro, whose future at Old Trafford appears to be in jeopardy. Struggling as both a centre-mid and centre-back this season, the Brazilian appears unable to deliver value to his team from any position, thereby testing the patience of fans and pundits alike.

Manchester United hosted Arsenal at Old Trafford in another high-stakes Premier League clash, considering both sides needed a victory.

Arsenal required all three points to ensure the Premier League is decided on the final day of the season while a triumph for United would go a long way in cementing the side’s ambitions of clinching European football.

Erik ten Hag started Andre Onana in goal with a defensive four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro, Jonny Evans and Diogo Dalot ahead of the Cameroonian.

Kobbie Mainoo and Sofyan Amrabat formed the pivot with Scott McTominay the most advanced midfielder in the starting XI. Rasmus Hojlund led the line with Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo on either side of him.

Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 1-0 loss against Arsenal.

Casemiro finished at United

Casemiro is one of the many players who should be axed by United during the summer transfer window and he showed again in the Arsenal game why he should be one of the first names out the door.

Amidst United’s injury crisis in the defensive department, the Brazilian has filled in at centre-back but it’s a role he’s spectacularly failed in.

He was badly exposed and embarrassed at Selhurst Park last week and the same thing happened again vs. the Gunners.

Casemiro played a big part in Arsenal’s opening goal in the 20th minute. A ball was put inside the box by Kai Havertz, prompting an alert Leandro Trossard to make a darting run into the near post before putting it into the back of the net.

However, the goal could have been easily avoided. Most of Ten Hag’s men pushed up the pitch in an attempt to play Havertz offside. However, Casemiro – who has been accused of losing one or two yards of pace – was lazy in getting up the pitch and played the German forward onside.

Casemiro could have also blocked Havertz’s cross but in keeping up with how his season has panned out, he failed to do so and allowed Trossard to bury his effort.

Wayne Rooney, who was on Sky Sports said about Trossard’s opening strike, “Casemiro has to get up the pitch.”

Roy Keane even went ahead to question Casemiro’s professionalism as he remarked, “Casemiro has to sprint out. I don’t know what he was doing. He doesn’t even need to make a silly angle for the goalkeeper.”

“You don’t have to be 100 per cent sprinting, but get up the pitch! This game is hard enough, you have to do the basics right and he hasn’t done the basics right. An experienced player gets up the pitch.”

It’s these kinds of instances that have plagued Casemiro all season and highlight why United should do everything in their power to part ways with the 32-year-old and bring in an upgrade. He’s past his best now and is increasingly becoming a liability to the team.

Ten Hag’s snubbing of Amad more puzzling than ever before

Amad was arguably one of United’s better performers across both halves.

He did well in his favoured right flank and provided the threat United have been sorely missing on that flank of the pitch.

The Ivorian kept the ball well, maintained possession and recycled it whenever required. Seemingly aware of the danger he posed, Arsenal sometimes double-teamed against him to keep him at bay.

Amad consistently seized the opportunity to take on his opponent and penetrate the box, showcasing remarkable versatility by attacking from both the inside and outside. In contrast, Antony has frequently shown a tendency to favour the outer flank, persistently opting to cut in on his left foot instead of exploiting the advantageous option of hitting the byline.

To put into context how brilliant Amad was, he completed more dribbles (3) than the entire Arsenal team combined (2) in the first half.

Amad’s display made it even more puzzling why Ten Hag hasn’t handed him significantly more minutes this season. The former Sunderland loanee clearly has the skill set to play the brand of football the Dutchman wants to implement at the club.

Unfortunately for Amad, he limped off in the 68th minute as he appeared to have sustained an injury. Before that, he hit the floor in pain and signalled to the bench that he couldn’t continue.

He was replaced by Antony who saw off the rest of the match.

Too little too late for Ten Hag

United were not hammered as everyone expected. In fact, the Red Devils competed and gave a decent account of themselves considering how events have panned out this season.

One cannot help but think that if Ten Hag had resorted to the kind of shape and tactics he employed against Arsenal, maybe United would have found some more joy and would perhaps be competing for a top-four finish.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS associates were present at Old Trafford to watch the team and while they may have taken some positives from the display, it may already be too late for Ten Hag.

The defeat at the hands of Arsenal means that United are almost certainly set to miss out on Europa League football unless they can somehow manage to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley later this month.

Manchester United slumped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, continuing their shambolic recent form.

From the opening minute, Man United were on the back foot, with Arsenal pushing deep into the final third and threatening the goalmouth with a well-drilled corner kick.

Before the fourth minute, United managed to launch a quick counter, however, Rasmus Hojlund misfired to send the ball over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Alejandro Garnacho took a shot, replicating Hojlund’s effort that ballooned over the top.

At the 15-minute mark, Diogo Dalot unleashed a shot from outside the box that also flew over the top. Clearly, United have some work to do on the training pitch to improve their shot accuracy.

20 minutes in, the away side grabbed the lead as Kai Havertz slipped the ball past Onana on the right to Leandro Trossard, who put the ball into an open goal. Despite tracking back in support, Casemiro failed to mark Trossard – his latest in a growing list of concerning slip-ups in recent times.

Eight minutes later, Bukayo Saka slotted a pass to Ben White, whose shot from the right beat Onana but also flew past the far post.

In the 36th minute, Amad Diallo was brought down on the edge of the box by Thomas Partey, however, the referee dismissed the calls for a foul. While Amad required some medical attention, he was able to return to the action soon after.

With three minutes to go until the break, Amad laid the ball off to Garnacho on the wing, who dribbled into the box. While he was able to get away a threatening cross, Arsenal keeper Raya managed to parry the ball out of danger.

Two minutes into three minutes of stoppage time, Sofyan Amrabat found Garnacho in the box, who attempted a shot which the Arsenal defence easily blocked, once again proving to be too well organised for United to break down.

As the teams made their way down the tunnel at half-time, it was clear that United would need to improve their shooting, failing to get any of their seven shots on target. For the majority of the half, the visitors appeared comfortably in control.

Four minutes after the restart, Garnacho swung in a cross that was unable to find a teammate. It appeared that time and again, the visitors’ defence was a step ahead of United’s attacking lineup.

A few moments later, it was Arsenal’s turn to pounce, with Trossard and Saka both attempting to get shots away in the box, however, United’s defence was able to hold steady and defuse the danger.

On the hour mark, Garnacho did well to cut into the box, with acres of space on either side of him. Despite being under no pressure, Garnacho’s shot flew over the top, continuing United’s appalling inaccuracy in front of goal.

64 minutes in, Trossard passed the ball into the box, which Havertz laid off to Martin Odegaard. The Arsenal captain’s shot made it through the hole in United’s defence, however, Onana was alert enough to catch the shot just in time.

A few minutes later, Casemiro tried to get United level by attempting an audacious long-range shot which Raya comfortably caught. Unbelievably, this was United’s first shot on target of the afternoon.

In the 69th minute, Erik ten Hag looked to introduce fresh legs to the contest, with Antony coming on for Amad.

Two minutes later, Antony weaved into the box and took another accurate shot for United, only for the Arsenal keeper to make a comfortable save. It appeared that some fresh energy was exactly what United needed to shift things up a gear.

Jonny Evans match came to an end 15 minutes early as he was replaced by Willy Kambwala.

In the 76th minute, United ramped up the pressure, with captain on the day McTominay laying the ball off to Garnacho, with his shot grazing the side netting.

With 12 minutes left on the clock, Gabriel Martinelli weaved through the United defence, laying off a threatening shot that Onana managed to tip over the bar with a full-stretch save. This was arguably the save of the match as United came within touching distance of falling two goals behind.

After United cleared a corner, Declan Rice collected the loose ball, driving a thunderous effort goalward that Onana did well to keep out. He made yet another save after Rice took another shot before Onana managed to get the ball out for good.

In the 85th minute, Kobbie Mainoo clashed with Takehiro Tomiyasu, with both players falling to the ground. Fortunately, Mainoo was able to recover and continue playing.

Ten Hag then decided to make a trio of substitutions, with Hojlund, Wan-Bissaka, and Amrabat making way for Ethan Wheatley, Omari Forson, and Christian Eriksen.

Six minutes of added time were announced, giving United plenty of time to find an equaliser.

While Martinelli appeared to be in on goal, Casemiro did well as United’s last line of defence, sticking his leg out to intercept the ball. While he laid off the ball to Garnacho, the Argentine was unable to capitalise yet again as his shot once again went wide.

Once the full-time whistle blew, United’s defeat came as little surprise following what was another lacklustre performance from a team lacking any passion or drive to win.

Starting XI: Onana, Amrabat, Hojlund, Amad, Garnacho, Casemiro, Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Evans, Mainoo, McTominay

Subs: Antony, Kambwala, Eriksen, Forson, Wheatley

Manchester United lost 0-1 to Arsenal at Old Trafford this afternoon. Here are our player ratings from the game:

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 5- Distribution, the main thing he was bought for, was lacking again. Actually didn’t have much to do until a save from Martinelli in the 79th minute.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 3- Left acres of space on Arsenal’s left flank time and again. Really needs to be sold this summer.

Casemiro 2- Appalling for Trossard goal. Of course, he’s not a natural centre back, but does that excuse the complete lack of awareness and effort?

Jonny Evans 5- Didn’t do too much wrong but hardly imperious.

Diogo Dalot 7- United’s best defender. Didn’t set the world on fire but was the only one that looked Premier League standard.

Kobbie Mainoo 7- Nothing fancy but was steady. Would like to see him take games more by the scruff of the neck. Can hold his head up.

Sofyan Amrabat 3.5- Made some mistakes and really offered very little to the side. A nice long pass early in second half. Gave the ball away a few times but at least he tried to get it back.

Amad 7- Without doing anything earth shattering, Amad was one of United’s best players. Great ball control and technique and drew a few fouls, even though Paul Tierney decided to ignore them. Arguably should have had an assist for the first-half penalty that wasn’t given. Went off the boil in the second half.

Scott McTominay 1- League two standard. Really shocking midfield performance from United’s captain for a day. Johnny-off-the-spot. How was he not subbed? Total passenger.

Alejandro Garnacho 3- Tried some of his runs and dribbles but his decision making really needs to improve. The end product was seriously lacking. Last ball terrible.

Rasmus Hojlund 3- Looks devoid of confidence and ideas. It would be easy to judge him on this sort of performance, but he needs better coaching and a better side around him before we can really judge whether he’s got what it takes.

Substitutes:

Antony 5- Did nothing to change the course of the game.

Willy Kambwala 6- Looked steady.

Christian Eriksen 6- No time to make much impact.

Omari Forson 6- No time to make much impact.

Ethan Wheatley 6- No time to make impact.

Manager Erik ten Hag 3– Tactics contained Arsenal quite well but the lack of any ball-playing midfielders seriously limited United’s attacking threat. Subs could have been made sooner.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has bizarrely claimed that the team’s loss at the hands of Crystal Palace was out of the blue and out of character, despite the club’s extremely poor form this season.

United suffered their 13th defeat of the Premier League campaign in a 4-0 battering vs. Palace at Selhurst Park.

A brace from Michael Olise and goals from Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell piled further misery on Ten Hag, who is already under intense pressure.

United were poor again and were outdone in almost every department by Oliver Glasner’s men.

After the game, Ten Hag spoke to reporters and gave his verdict on his players’ performance and what went wrong for the team in London.

Ten Hag said in his press conference, “It’s very disappointing. Definitely, the worst defeat [of the season]. We should have done better. The team performance was not correct, making big mistakes and not following the plan or the script or the rules we have. Of course, also individual mistakes but then we should cover each other and we didn’t. We let each other down and then you get the worst defeat.”

When asked whether the defeat was out of the blue for United, he responded, “Actually yes, because this is the fourth defeat in 2024. So far you have always seen a team that was following the script and that’s why we didn’t get a lot of wins but we were hard to beat and today we were easy to beat.”

He insisted that all the players in his ranks are committed to him and want him to succeed. “I’m sure that they have the right intentions and they were eager from the start but once we were playing, we didn’t perform. Individuals didn’t perform and as a team, we didn’t perform.”

Ten Hag admitted that Jonny Evans was not fully fit and was rushed back into the action because of the club’s injury crisis in the defensive department.

The Dutchman remarked, “Definitely not [Evans wasn’t ready]. Huge respect to Jonny that he stepped in but he wasn’t ready to go into this game. He only had two days of training and so that is one example. He played for 90 minutes and that’s really a reward that he did this but of course, he can’t play to the levels that he normally does.”

Ten Hag doubled down on his statement that United have only tasted defeat on four occasions since the start of 2024 and also called on all involved with the club to have faith.

He was put to the task on where the belief should come from. He answered, “As I said, we’ve only had four defeats so far and all season we’ve had big problems in the backline especially. All the time there was a team with fighting spirit and hard to beat. As I said, today we were easy to beat.”

The 54-year-old coach urged his players to emulate the drive and “fighting spirit” demonstrated by the United away fans, who were brilliant in their support of the team even in very difficult circumstances.

Up next for United is Arsenal at Old Trafford this weekend.
