A frustrating season from Manchester United has been blighted by injuries and off-field dramas, but it is the on-field shift in tactics from those of the previous campaign by manager Erik ten Hag that have perplexed fans and pundits alike.

Last season’s “Ten Hag ball” – a creative, progressive possession-based system with a deep lying playmaker and a fluid front three brought great success, with United qualifying for the Champions League, winning the League Cup, reaching the FA Cup final and Europa League semi-final.

However, somewhat inexplicably, the manager announced in pre-season that he wanted to make United “the best transition team in the world” and suddenly changed his tactical set-up completely.

The deep-lying play maker was replaced by a ball-carrying midfielder and Ten Hag Ball was replaced by what is not-so-affectionately termed Chaos Ball, a strategy based on quick counter-attacks, overloading the opposition when in possession and a high press out of possession.

The results so far have been, it is probably fair to say, disastrous. United have suffered more shots against them than any other team outside the relegation zone, the most in a season since 2003, with nine matches still remaining.

Watching United this season is like watching underdogs from a lower league, even against the likes of Luton Town and Bournemouth.

There is a lingering hope among many that the tactics were enforced in Ten Hag’s mind by injuries to key personnel, and that he may return to the more controlled system of last season.

But an interesting video that has been doing the rounds on social media shows that in fact, these tactics are not Ten Hag stepping out of character. They are not an aberration. He employed them at Ajax and defended them stoutly even when the legendary Ruud Gullit pointed out their glaring weakness.

In the 2019 video, Gullit is analysing Ajax’s Champions League home defeat to Real Madrid (a tie Ten Hag’s men subsequently went on to win before eventually losing to Spurs in the semi-final of the competition).

Gullit points out the gaps left between defence and midfield when Ajax go forward, and how easy it is to exploit by Real when possession is conceded.

The great man also noted that similar gaps were left against Bayern Munich in the group stages that should have been punished more.

The compère asked Gullit if he recognises the pattern of a team seeming unbeatable one minute and beatable by anyone the next.

“The annoying part about Ajax is … when things aren’t going well, what do you do next?” he replied.

“And that’s when they’re vulnerable.

“Especially in transition…I’ve already seen it many times before.

“At the moment they’re taking a lot of risks, especially in midfield, and all of a sudden you get ridiculous counters.”

Gullit then talked through an example from the match noting, “it gets intercepted and then they can run straight through”.

Other examples were shown of teams mounting easy counter-attacks before the compère asked if that is not always the danger of playing a high press.

“Well, there always has to be a player in the middle, who says ‘what if?’” Gullit replies, citing Manchester City’s Fernandinho as an example.

“That is something you must have: ‘what if we lose the ball?’”

But Ten Hag disagreed.

“The way we play, those are the risks that are already calculated,” he said, before chalking the Real Madrid goal down to the quality of the opposition.

Ten Hag’s Ajax overachieved in that season, winning the Eredivisie by a landslide and enjoying that epic run in the Champions League. So his defence of the risks as “calculated” held some water.

However, at Manchester United, playing in the unforgiving Premier League, they clearly do not.

The horrific gaps in the video are chillingly familiar to United fans and the concerning factor is the manager’s stubbornness and belief in the system that allows them. It means, if Ten Hag stays at Manchester United, then so, it seems, will chaos ball.

Manchester United lost yet another game yesterday against a very poor Chelsea side, having had the lead nine minutes into injury time.

Yesterday we covered post-match comments made by manager Erik ten Hag to TNT Sports, in which he claimed United “dominated the game” and “were brilliant.”

It is certainly not what United fans saw.

Whilst it is true that once again, injuries to two centre backs and two soft penalties meant luck was not on United’s side, nonetheless, the match was another example of a performance lacking in strategy, tactics, organisation and unity.

One decision Ten Hag made was to drop Marcus Rashford for Antony, who himself has had a season dogged by poor form and off-pitch distractions.

It is true that the Brazilian was by no means the worst player on the pitch, but it seemed curious that the manager spent a big chunk of his post-match press conference singing his praises, particularly since he was responsible for conceding an early penalty with a clumsy challenge in the area.

“All our players were a danger, Garnacho, Antony, he was very good. I said it before, in the last weeks, he’s progressing,” Ten Hag said.

“You see it in training, you see it when he come on against Liverpool, also against Brentford, he’s stepping up, he’s understanding the message, he’s progressing, so we’re pleased with that.”

There seems to be a favouritism regarding Antony that Jadon Sancho alluded to when he had his famous falling out with Ten Hag. Meanwhile, one of the real heroes against Liverpool, Amad Diallo, once again sat on the bench for the whole 100 minutes, while another, Mason Mount, was only introduced late in the game.

Another obsession that the Dutchman has is that United are a “transition” team, basing the play on swift counter-attacks. At the start of this season, he inexplicably abandoned the more possession-based formula that brought so much success last season to pursue this fantasy.

Again on this, at the post-match presser (via Hayters TV), his comments seemed delusional.

“It’s our strength how we score from counters,” he said.

“We can be such a massive threat, we have seen today again an example of how with tempo we can beat our opponents.

“We are unstoppable.”

We are not unstoppable, Erik. We have been stopped more times this season than in virtually any other in the club’s history.

Aside from the questionable decision to do a complete 180 on last season’s system, the transition tactic requires United to soak up pressure, which is madness when the defence has to be changed every week, where a new goalkeeper had to settle in, and when key players such as Casemiro are built for possession-based football and not at all suited to a transitional style.

It is madness to pursue this style when your best weapon in terms of pace, Marcus Rashford, is off form and when you have only one fit centre forward to do the amount of running required for it for most of the season.

In fact, one of Ten Hag’s excuses for the poor season has been the number of injuries, but the tactics he is employing require massive physical endurance and stamina and the exhaustion caused by that, in itself, could have been a major factor in the number of injuries sustained.

Whatever happens from now on with Ten Hag and his management of Manchester United, one thing is clear from this season: he is an incredibly stubborn man. He will stick to something doggedly if he believes it is right despite all evidence to the contrary.

Sometimes, that can be a great asset, but sometimes, it can be your undoing.

A video has gone viral on social media which shows Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir at his worst.

The post demonstrates a range of mistakes that look eerily reminiscent of comical errors that first choice keeper Andre Onana has made in this campaign.

These mistakes include failing to keep out seemingly inoffensive free kicks (think Onana versus Galatasaray), not attempting to dive for the ball (Onana versus Forest for their first goal) and an inability to keep long distance shots out.

There are also a few examples of the Turk parrying the ball into his own net. It has been reported that Onana’s unorthodox parrying technique is causing havoc in the United defence, so fans will be hoping that Bayindir will do better in this regard.

The Turkish keeper can even be seen making mistakes with his feet that to this point, Onana has avoided. It has been reported that the Turk is not the best with ball distribution and it is something he needs to work on.

However, it must be stated that even the best keepers in the world can look horrendous from YouTube clips. If you search for Peter Schmeichel blunders online, you would be excused for thinking that the Dane was a League Two keeper.

In spite of some to-ing and fro-ing, Onana has eventually decided to represent his nation at the African Cup of Nations. It was thought that the Cameroonian may stay avoid risking his first choice position at the club because of the poor form he has suffered since moving to the club.

Moreover, Erik ten Hag is thought to be trying to delay the African’s departure as late as possible by making him play in the FA Cup tie versus Wigan and missing a friendly match for his country to prepare for the tournament.

However, the Turk has played well in the limited gametime he has received this season. Despite not making an appearance yet for Manchester United, he has played well for Turkey and was a major reason for his nation’s impressive victory against Germany.

Ten Hag has also been very complimentary of the keeper and has previously claimed that he will get his chances at the club.

Speaking before the away trip to Galatasaray, ironically before Onana put in a disasterclass of a performance, the manager stated, “we are very pleased with Altay, he gets used to the Premier League, he gets used to European football – which is tough when you’re coming from Turkey. But we are very pleased with that process, he’s doing very well”.

With Onana potentially missing until the middle of February and crucial Premier League ties versus Tottenham and Aston Villa, United fans will be hoping that the Bayindir from the national side will turn up and not the one from the video above.

No doubt the pressure will be on but there is also an immense opportunity for the 25 year old to nail down a first team place in Onana’s absence.

Manchester United have had a very challenging season, but a stirring second half comeback win against high-flying Aston Villa has allowed fans to be a little more positive for a while at least.

After two goals from the electric Alejandro Garnacho, the moment every United fans has been waiting for arrived.

A corner was swung in and the Villa defence could only clear it to Rasmus Hojlund, who hit a sweet first time strike right into the corner of the net.

The 20 year old boyhood fan ran to the Stretford End, visibly holding back tears to celebrate his first Premier League goal. As his teammates left him to return to their positions, the Dane let out a Viking roar which would have been probably as much relief as joy.

Old Trafford erupted and nobody was excited as United’s eccentric goalkeeper, Andre Onana.

Onana, like Hojlund, was an expensive summer signing that has faced a plethora of criticism since he joined the club. However, one thing you cannot blame “the boss” for having is a lack of passion.

Echoing scenes from the last gasp victory versus Brentford in October, the Cameroonian keeper can be seen in a social media video running all the way from his goal to celebrate passionately at the Stretford End with his teammates.

Many pundits have taken delight in stating that there is no togetherness at the club and a lack of leadership in the team. While this may be hard to argue against sometimes, many United fans will point to some clear examples of a side that despite their massive struggles, are still together.

Scott McTominay has recently stated that despite reports, there is not the toxicity in the dressing room of other years. Moreover, Bruno Fernandes’ decision to hand over his penalty to Marcus Rashford and his player of the match award to Jonny Evans does not paint the picture of a team at war with one another.

Even recently, Raphael Varane could have selfishly taken the credit for his player of the match award against Liverpool after a long time out of the team. However, the World Cup winner instead, decided to credit all of the backline for the award in an instagram post.

Wins like last night will go far to dispel the idea that the team lacks unity.

Manchester United fans will hope the media will not have another chance to sharpen their knives after the final game of 2023, away to Nottingham Forest this coming Saturday.

Manchester United’s stuttering form continued on Saturday night with Newcastle United beating Erik ten Hag’s men by a goal to nil.

In truth, the scoreline flattered United with the home side in full control throughout the game and unfortunate not to put the visitor to the sword.

United looked shattered on the night and completely devoid of any passion and desire, particularly at the top end of the pitch.

Anthony Martial was given the nod ahead of mega-money summer signing Rasmus Hojlund yet did very little to justify his selection.

The Frenchman was virtually non-existent throughout his 60 minute cameo, looking as though he wanted to be anywhere else but on the field.

Erik ten Hag was seen fuming at his forward for an incident toward the end of the first half which saw a Newcastle defender stroll away from the feeble attempt of pressure from Martial.

The move almost resulted in a goal for the hosts and Ten Hag couldn’t hide his anger.

Martial didn’t take the verbal volley lying down and can be seen shouting back at his manager whilst gesticulating in frustration toward the United bench.

The 27-year-old is yet to complete 90 minutes for United this season and given his first half performance it was a surprise to see him reappear for the second period.

He was eventually hooked after Anthony Gordon’s opener but the damage was done and United couldn’t find a route back into the game.

In fairness to Martial, he was one of many players who looked completely uninterested last night, but given his career at Old Trafford is on the line, the lack of effort was alarming.

Ten Hag will need a big response from his players for the visit of Chelsea on Wednesday night with the big games coming thick and fast for United.

The last international break of the calendar year was wrapped up over the weekend with European nations learning their fate regarding qualification Euro 2024.

Portugal are one of the sides safely through to next summer’s tournament, finishing with maximum points from their ten qualifying fixtures.

Roberto Martinez men rounded off their campaign with a routine 2-0 victory against Iceland but it was an incident in the tunnel at half-time that grabbed the headlines, rather than the performance on the night.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva were caught sharing an awkward reaction toward Bruno Fernandes’ half-time pep talk with goalkeeper, Diogo Costa.

In a clip that surfaced on X, Fernandes appeared to be discussing something with Costa with Ronaldo and Silva in earshot of the conversation.

The pair then made eye contact with each other before smirking and turning away from their teammates.

Ronaldo then jogged out of the tunnel with a bemused grin on his face to start the second half.

It’s unclear what Fernandes was saying and the reaction from Ronaldo and Silva could have been unrelated to the United captain but the clip makes for awkward viewing and suggests there could be a lack of respect from Ronaldo toward Fernandes.

The United man was in fine form once more for his country, lashing home a fine effort in the first half to set Portugal on their way.

Braga striker Ricardo Horta added to Bruno’s strike midway through the second period to put the cherry on a fine qualifying campaign for Martinez and his troops.

Portugal will be one of the favourites for the crown in Germany and the tunnel incident is unlikely to cause any disturbance in the happy Portuguese camp.

Bruno will hope to translate his international form to club level with United facing a tricky set of fixtures in the coming weeks.

Trips to Everton, Galatasaray and Newcastle are on the horizon before United’s next Premier League outing at Old Trafford midway through December.

A well-placed Fulham fan captured Harry Maguire’s exasperated reaction as yet another goal was ruled out for Manchester United by VAR during Saturday’s win against Fulham.

The centre-half’s frustration is palpable as referee John Brooks assesses the VAR monitor, his anger undoubtedly shared by every single United fan who tuned in to watch the game.

(WARNING – Video contains expletives)

Though United would ultimately end up winning the game 1-0, courtesy of a last-minute winner by Bruno Fernandes, it was a tough match for Erik ten Hag’s men, devoid of clear-cut chances or any semblance of attractive football.

Arguably, Fulham were the better team and may feel hard done by to have come away from the match with nothing to show for their efforts. The home side were largely held at bay by the impressive Maguire, who overcame an early blow to the head to produce a Man of the Match performance in the United defence.

The injury crisis that continues to plague the United dressing room undoubtedly played a significant role in this however, with Ten Hag once again fielding a severely depleted side.

Marcus Rashford and Casemiro were ruled out in the days leading up to the game, joining Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo on the injury table. Raphael Varane and Kobbie Mainoo, both recently returned from absence, were only fit enough to make the bench.

Nevertheless, it would have likely been a very different story if Scott McTominay’s opening goal in the 8th minute had not been disallowed.

A free-kick from Christian Eriksen found Alejandro Garnacho arriving at the back-post, who subsequently fired it back across goal into the path of the Scottish international, as McTominay finished off a well-executed move. Or so they thought.

VAR promptly jumped in to once again rule out a United goal; the fourth such example this season.

Maguire was adjudged to have been offside as the free-kick was taken, and then deemed to have been interfering with play to such an extent his offside was sufficient enough to rule the goal out.

Given it was Maguire’s ear which looked offside, and the centre-back never actually touched the ball – instead, if anything, being fouled by the Fulham defender – his frustrated swearing in the video above are understandable. It’s not a new feeling for United either.

In the entirety of last year’s campaign, the team with the most goals disallowed by VAR was Liverpool – with six. United are already fast approaching this total with less than a third of the season played.

In fact, only eleven goals have been ruled out through VAR intervention this year so, meaning Ten Hag’s side account for over a third of the total so far. Manchester City, by comparison, have had none.

United have not played well this season and the players, as well their manager, must shoulder the blame for these performances. But when the team is facing almost unprecedented levels of bad luck – either through injury or through constant poor VAR decisions – some leeway must be granted.

Manchester United fans have brought their battle to oust the Glazers as owners of the club Stateside, adding further pressure as the tycoons dither over selling.

The fans hired a plane to fly a “Glazers Out” banner over the Raymond James Stadium in Florida as the Glazer-owned Tampa Bay Buccaneers played the Philadelphia Eagles in Monday night’s American Football game.

As per The Daily Mail, “The banner was organised by the United Pittsburgh and Tampa supporters groups, who were praised for their efforts on social media.”

Showing their presence in the Glazers’ “back yard” is important for United fans, who are more desperate than ever to see the Americans leave the club after 18 years of ownership.

Almost a year ago the family announced its intention to “seek strategic alternatives” for the ownership of the club, which initiated a long and painful bidding process as two main contenders emerged to buy the club.

Qatari prince, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani, and INEOS owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are still waiting for a decision on who will be the next owner after both submitted bids in the region of £5 million.

It is believed that the Glazers are holding out for more.

The fans have been even more enraged over the club’s handling of the Mason Greenwood situation and the owners’ inability or unwillingness to adequately back Erik ten Hag in the last two transfer windows.

In the winter window, despite the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo, the Glazers would not make funds available and Ten Hag had to resort to loaning Burnley striker Wout Weghorst for the rest of the season.

This summer saw the Red Devils unable to even compete for the signing of top starts such as Declan Rice, snapped up by Arsenal, and Kim Min-Jae and Harry Kane, signed by Bayern Munich.

Unable to pay for the transfer of a centre back to replace the outgoing Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly, Ten Hag was forced to bring in 35-year-old Jonny Evans on a free transfer.

The Glazers will perhaps need no reminding of fans’ determination for them to step aside but will at least have to endure the humiliation of it being brought to the attention of the millions of Americans watching Monday Night Football.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana came to his teammates’ defence during an interview ahead of the team’s Champions League opening group stage match against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

In an interview with Norway’s TV 2 Sport, Onana was quick to interject when it appeared as if the interviewer was about to shift blame for the high amount of goals conceded by Man United solely onto the team’s defenders.

“You let in 10 goals, and I know it’s not your fault,” the interviewer began, seemingly shifting more blame onto United’s defenders than the keeper for United’s defensive woes.

Before he could complete his question, however, the Cameroonian shot-stopper came to his teammates’ defence, declaring: “We win together, we lose together. Clean sheet is for all of us.”

Onana continued by explaining that the onus is on every player to come away with the victory, himself included.

He even went so far as to say that, as United’s goalkeeper, his teammates would have to “point fingers” at him when they concede because of his responsibility between the posts.

Aside from his display of loyalty to his team, the 27 year old also exhibited confidence ahead of United’s clash with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena tonight.

While United’s first-choice keeper wouldn’t go so far as to guarantee that his team could come away with the victory, he did state that the players would “die on the pitch” and “give everything we have.”

Still, when looking at the entire season ahead, Onana does believe that United could overcome their disastrous start to the campaign and potentially even win the Champions League.

He explained that he knows the competition well, mentioning how he took Inter Milan to the Champions League final last season.

In Onana’s opinion, United already have the quality in their squad to go the distance.

But first, United will look to pick up points in a tricky away match as they look to establish dominance in Group A and begin to build a path to the Champions League knockout stages.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana has been spotted arriving at an Italian airport ahead of his flight to England to complete a sensational move to Manchester United.

A video posted by journalist Giovanni Albanese shows the Cameroonian alighting from a black van. He then stops to pose for pictures with a few fans before making his way into the building.

Yesterday, Fabrizio Romano clarified that Onana was set to travel to England on Tuesday for his medicals with United.

This came after the Red Devils reached an agreement over a transfer fee with the Nerazzurri for the shot-stopper.

Romano has now given a fresh update on the 27-year-old’s journey from Italy.

The transfer guru explains, “After some changes to the plan due to flights issues [no problems for the deal, at all] Onana will travel to the UK in 40 mins.”

“Onana’s private flight scheduled at 10.30pm Italy time from Turin.”

“André will land in Birmingham later tonight. Medical tomorrow.

Erik ten Hag had earmarked Onana as his primary target to effectively replace David de Gea between the sticks.

De Gea’s tumultuous departure from the club only served to constrain United to step up their efforts for the former Ajax star.

Pending the outcome of the medical, Ten Hag will get his main man and re-unite with a player with whom he enjoyed so much success in the past.
