Manchester United’s coming summer transfer window will go a long way towards deciding how the INEOS era at the club begins.

While the focus will be on more long-term goals, an immediate refreshment of the squad is the need of the hour.

Defence is the biggest area of concern, with the club conceding a record 81 goals so far this season and four tough fixtures up ahead.

It has been due to a combination of freakish amount of injuries and bad form that United look like they need to score four goals every game to have a chance of winning.

To that tune, INEOS are looking to be ruthless in the summer and Victor Lindelof figures to be a part of that culling.

TalkSport reports that United will want two new centre-backs this summer as there are no plans to extend Raphael Varane’s contract and Lindelof will be put up for sale.

The Swede has had his detractors, especially when it comes to the physical side of the game, but has generally been a reliable presence.

However, the injury malaise has engulfed him this season as well and with that, his biggest ability which is his availability, can no longer be relied upon.

As a result, he has joined the list of expendables at United with the club open to offers for him.

Lindelof also hits the sweet spot where United might get a good fee for him, something which can’t be said for many of their expendables.

He was a target for Atletico Madrid last season but was kept on for squad depth and similar interest could be the case this summer as well.

He will enter the last year of his contract in the summer so this will be United’s last chance of getting a fee for him.

As per Financial Fair Play rules and amortisation, any fee received for him figures to be pure profit as he joined United in 2017 so his original value on the books has been wiped off during his initial contract.

Therefore, United could pounce at the chance of getting pure profit while also ridding themselves of a player who has had question marks over him and is in the last year of his contract.

Manchester United hardly ever do things the easy way and that was once again the case against the Premier League’s bottom team Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

The Blades took the lead twice but the hosts fought back with skipper Bruno Fernandes leading from the front as they eventually ran out 4-2 winners.

The team displayed a much more possession-based approach instead of Erik ten Hag’s usual chaos ball which might have been instigated by new technical director Jason Wilcox as per reports relayed by The Peoples Person.

It will be interesting to see how long this lasts. The Red Devils dominated possession and had 72 percent of the ball while also making 722 passes but mistakes were still made which allowed Chris Wilder’s team to score twice.

Defensive woes continuing

The defence had a patched-up look to it with defensive midfielder Casemiro partnering Harry Maguire at the back after all the remaining four senior centre-backs all got injured along with academy star Willy Kambwala.

The duo have conceded five goals in their last two games — thrice against Championship side Coventry and two against Sheffield United.

Ten Hag’s latest injury update seems to suggest nobody is fit enough to return for the game against Burnley and this season has seen the entire backline get decimated by injuries.

Constant reshuffling has not helped the team settle with the 20-time English league champions conceding three or more goals 14 times across this term while also letting in the second-most goals in the Champions League group stages.

It is clear to see that an overhaul at the back is required with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans’ deals coming to an end while both Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been linked with exits.

As per Turkish outlet Aspor, Galatasaray are interested in a summer deal for the Swede who cost United €35 million back in 2017. The Turkish league leaders have also been linked with a move for midfielder Christian Eriksen recently.

Lindelof’s injury record is starting to hamper his fortunes with the former Benfica man missing 17 games this season and eight last term.

He has struggled for consistency this season and has not been helped by the fact that he was forced to play as an auxiliary left-back at times due to the mounting injury crisis.

Gala eyeing Lindelof

“Galatasaray have added Victor Lindelöf, who plays for Manchester United, to their transfer list. The yellow-red team want to add the Swedish football player to their squad at the end of the season.”

The 29-year-old has been a reliable performer but never world-class during his seven-year stint and with the club in need of funds, he could be let go.

His current market value stands at €15 million and INEOS would do well to earn more from the player’s sale. The Sweden national team captain’s United deal ends in 2025 after the club triggered the one-year extension option.

Many will argue that Maguire needs to go ahead of the Swede but ultimately, it will be INEOS’ new backroom staff who take the final call.

Manchester United’s defensive reserves have been severely depleted with manager Erik ten Hag forced to hand young Willy Kambwala his first start at Old Trafford against Liverpool last Sunday.

The Frenchman excelled and is set to earn a new deal to ward off interest from Serie A giants Napoli but the futures of several others remain up in the air.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is plotting a summer clearout to raise capital for reinforcements and there is a chance of multiple exits from defence.

Performances this season have been less than ideal with the 20-time English league champions conceding three or more goals 13 times this season.

More than one defender could leave

Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans both got injured in the game against Chelsea and their contracts end in June with INEOS looking at letting the Frenchman leave to free up space on the wage bill.

What will happen with the 36-year-old remains to be seen but the manager reportedly is quite impressed with what the Northern Irishman has offered and is keen on holding on to him for another year.

Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are also on the sidelines and while the club want to keep both, the Swede has been linked with several other clubs and his recent injury record has not been great.

Then there is Harry Maguire, who has shown a resurgence in form after being close to getting sold last summer, and there are murmurs that West Ham United could return for the former club captain.

Injuries have been a massive factor that has derailed the campaign and considering departures, this could open up more than one spot in the squad.

Football Insider have claimed the Red Devils are eyeing two centre-back additions in the summer.

One will be a big-name signing which will entail a higher spend while the other addition is expected to be a diamond in the rough or in other words, someone young who can develop further in the years to come.

Multiple arrivals

“Man United are starting work on deals to sign two centre-backs in the upcoming summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

“It is believed the Red Devils will pursue both a big-money signing and another younger, less polished defender arrival.”

Big-name targets include Gleison Bremer, Antonio Silva and Jarrad Branthwaite just to name a few while the club is keeping tabs on rising Argentine star Aaron Anselmino.

This is a foolproof strategy and makes sense considering the club is finally planning for the future with INEOS now on board instead of signing quick fixes.

Manchester United have decided to keep Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez at the club despite their ongoing injury problems.

Martinez has been plagued by numerous serious injuries over the last twelve months and was frustratingly ruled out yet again, after just returning to action at the end of March. However, not many would consider the Argentine’s place in the squad at risk just yet, as he performed wonderfully in his first season at Old Trafford and certainly deserves the chance to prove he can stay fit next year.

Lindelof’s case is not so clear-cut.

The Swedish captain has played 27 times this season for the Red Devils but like so many of the team’s defenders, has suffered from on and off knocks.

Whilst United’s problems at the back have stemmed from poor tactics and out of form players, the 31 different defensive combinations they have had to play in the Premier League this season have also majorly contributed to the defensive mess.

As a result of the centre back’s injury issues, it was assumed by many that he may be on his way out of Old Trafford. Consequently, he has been linked to numerous clubs across Europe such as AC Milan and Sevilla.

With the defender’s contract running out next summer, this would be the moment to sell the player to get any sort of fee for him, as next January he could begin to negotiate a free transfer to clubs outside of the United Kingdom.

In spite of this, Football Insider report that sources have told them, “Man United have decided to keep both Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez at the club despite their persistent injury problems”.

“The decision has been made by new Red Devils part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS organisation ahead of the 2024/25 season as the players have been assessed as “important” by the new regime.

It was also relayed by The Peoples Person yesterday that INEOS had decided to let Varane leave on a free transfer to free up wage space for the summer window.

In this context, the new owners are probably hesitant to lose more experience and being slightly younger and on significantly lower wages, will appeal to the new hierarchy. Furthermore, the Swede is more likely to accept a bench role than the bigger-named former Real Madrid defender.

United supporters will be hoping for new centre backs recruitments as Jarred Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer and Jean-Clair Todibo have all been continuously linked to the club.

Therefore if Lindelof was to stay as fourth or fifth choice centre back, it could be a smart piece of business by the new owners.

Manchester United defensive duo Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof are set to miss a month of competitive action due to fresh injury setbacks.

United have confirmed the devastating news via their official website.

The club’s statement reads, “Manchester United centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez will be out of action for at least a month due to muscle injuries.”

Lindelof was taken off just before the 70th minute mark during United’s most recent clash against Brentford.

The Swede started alongside Raphael Varane at the heart of the Red Devils’ backline but neither player completed the match. Varane was also substituted at the interval but it was Lindelof’s issue which seemed a bit more serious.

Lindelof hit the ground while clutching his hamstrings.

The 29-year-old was unavailable to Erik ten Hag for selection for around a month during the busy December-January period amid a groin injury.

Even more disastrous is that Martinez is also facing a spell on the sidelines while he recovers from yet another physical setback picked up this term.

The World Cup winner has managed just nine Premier League appearances and 11 games across all competitions, during a campaign that has been riddled with injuries.

Martinez missed almost four months due to a foot injury picked up in Setember before he suffered a knee injury just four games into his return.

He just made his comeback into the team during United’s Saturday clash vs. Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium when he replaced Lindelof. Unfortunately, it now seems that the return was a little too soon for the 26-year-old who can’t seem to catch a break in his second campaign at Old Trafford.

According to United, Martinez has now sustained a calf strain in training and will be unavailable for the Red Devils’ next few clashes.

Ten Hag’s men are back in action on Thursday when they make their way to London to take on Mauricio Pochettino’s men. United then host Liverpool on Sunday.

An injury update has been issued on Manchester United defensive duo Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

Varane and Lindelof started together as the centre-back pairing in United’s 1-1 draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

The two did relatively well as a unit to prevent Brentford from breaching Andre Onana’s goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Varane especially was a monster in the air and was impressive in the way he won his aerial duels and helped neutralize the Bees’ threat from set pieces.

However, the Frenchman was taken off at the break after a collision with Ivan Toney.

A moment in the game occurred in which Varane was forced to make a huge tackle to keep the Brentford striker from getting his shot off.

It appears that his crucial intervention came at a steep personal price, which saw him pick up a physical setback. Harry Maguire came in for the World Cup-winning Frenchman.

Even worse for United is that they lost their other central defender later on at around the 67th-minute mark. Lindelof went down inside his own box without contact.

While on the floor, the Swede was clutching his hamstrings and seemed to be in pain. It became clear he couldn’t carry on and he was immediately replaced by Lisandro Martinez.

According to Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston, Lindelof was limping while he left Brentford’s grounds.

Railston also gave an update on Varane’s fitness. The United n.o 19 told him that his injury is “not too bad.”

While the Varane news is a bit positive, concern for Lindelof within the fanbase will undoubtedly mount.

This term, Erik ten Hag has had to contend with key members of United’s backline missing several games due to injuries.

At the moment, the only fully fit centre-backs that are available to the Dutchman for selection are Martinez, Maguire and Willy Kambwala.

Jonny Evans is also seemingly still recovering as he was not even on the bench against Brentford.

Manchester United travelled to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Thomas Frank’s Brentford in another crucial Premier League affair.

United headed into the game off the back of a pulsating FA Cup triumph over Liverpool that sent the club to the semi-final of the competition.

Erik ten Hag was boosted by one or two returns, with the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro coming back from injury. Both players were named on the bench.

However, the United boss named an unchanged XI from the one that beat Liverpool. Andre Onana started in goal with a defensive four of Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ahead of him.

Kobbie Mainoo was deemed fit enough to start after doubts were cast over his availability for the match due to an illness.

The Carrington academy graduate slotted next to Scott McTominay and captain Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

Rasmus Hojlund led the line in an attacking trio also consisting of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes. Here are three things we learned from Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Brentford.

Poor first-half performance

United were underwhelming in the opening 45 performances and Brentford were undoubtedly the dominant force.

Ten Hag’s men were lucky to head down the tunnel with the score still level. The Bees fashioned the most clear-cut opportunities and would have felt unlucky not to have grabbed one or two before the interval.

Ivan Toney had the chance to break the deadlock but fortunately for United, his effort struck the post. A sublime pass from Yoane Wissa split the Red Devils’ backline with laughable ease. Toney got on the end of it and fired a shot but couldn’t find the back of the net.

The English striker was good in the first half and gave the United backline plenty of problems. In another instance, Toney received the ball in transition and easily outdid Lindelof. The Brentford man got it onto his left foot but was unable to hit the target.

Brentford also hit the upwork from one of their players’ attempted headed finish following a corner kick.

To highlight just how inferior United were in that opening period, the team only managed seven touches in the opposition box in comparison to Brentford’s 34 touches.

The West London outfit also registered 14 shots at Onana’s goal. United managed only three shots but none challenged Mark Flekken, who had little to do.

Another concerning thing about United was just how incoherent their play was. Ten Hag’s stars struggled to keep hold of the ball, maintain possession and sustain spells of pressure.

Brentford were stronger and more aggressive in the duels. They were first to most of the first and second balls.

The midfield was distorted and at times, young Mainoo found himself isolated and up against multiple rival players. The 18-year-old was one of the few United players who tried and any little control or positive passage of proceedings originated from him.

United’s attack was ineffective, to say the least. Rashford and Garnacho were mostly anonymous and seemed to lack any inspiration.

Apart from Rashford’s speculative long-range effort towards the end of the half, both wingers didn’t really produce much between themselves.

Hojlund cut a very frustrated and lonely figure and it was hardly surprising. The goalscorer had nothing to pounce on and there were barely any chances created for him.

While Ten Hag would have been relieved that his side didn’t concede despite being on the back foot for most of the first half, the Dutchman – like most fans – would have been greatly concerned with what he saw.

Varane and Lindelof injury worries

The only personnel change Ten Hag made after the break was bringing on Harry Maguire for Varane.

At one point in the first half, Varane collided with Toney and it seems he didn’t come out of the clash unscathed.

Toney was lining up a shot, prompting Varane to immediately intervene with a huge tackle that arguably kept United from letting one.

However, it came at some personal expense. The World Cup winner was visibly in pain as he fell to the ground and writhed around in pain and discomfort.

Initially, it appeared like all was well but it’s telling that Varane didn’t come out for the second half even though he was the better between himself and Lindelof.

Varane was crucial aerially and he helped prevent Brenftord from breaching United via their incredibly threatening set-piece routines.

To add to United’s misery, Lindelof also went down with a non-contact injury in the 67th minute. The Swede was clutching his hamstring and was unable to continue.

Lindelof was replaced by Martinez, who made his first appearance for United in eight weeks.

Should Lindelof and Varane be sidelined for lengthy periods, it would come as a major blow to Ten Hag, who has had to contend with most of his vital stars sustaining physical setbacks all term and missing multiple games.

If both Varane and Lindelof are ruled out, United’s defensive department would be heavily decimated, leaving Maguire, Martinez and Willy Kambwala as the only fit and available centre-backs available to the manager for selection. Jonny Evans is also out and was not even on the bench against Brentford.

Questions over Ten Hag’s long-term suitability remain

United’s display vs. Brentford only raised more questions about Ten Hag’s long-term tenure as United boss rather than answering already existing ones.

The 20-time English champions looked like they had completed the ultimate smash-and-grab in the dying embers of the match when substitute Mason Mount found the back of the net.

However, Brentford got back into it and ensured the spoils were split between the two teams.

A momentary lapse of concentration in the box allowed Toney to produce a cut-back into an unmarked Kristoffer Ajer, who made no mistake from close range.

Not many will claim that Brentford didn’t deserve their reward. A win would have likely prevented Ten Hag from coming under pressure but a draw almost certainly guarantees that the Dutchman will be subjected to scrutiny.

It has been suggested that new United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS organisation could look to make a managerial chance.

It’s believed that Ratcliffe has not been impressed by the work Ten Hag has done this season and performances like what the team put up at the Gtech Community Stadium hardly help the 53-year-old coach’s cause to remain in the Old Trafford hot seat.

United’s poor display carried on for the rest of the game and it was shocking just how Ten Hag and his players seemed bereft of ideas to overturn the situation in their favour before Mount scored.

Thomas Frank gave his counterpart in the dugout a tactical schooling and United were extremely lucky to even get a share of the points.

Toney and Wissa continued causing havoc for United and it’s a massive surprise neither of them found the back of the net.

To put United’s woeful performance into context, the 20-time English champions conceded more shots against Brentford than they did vs. Manchester City at the Etihad. Unlike City who are battling for the title, Brentford are aiming to avoid getting dragged into a relegation scrap.

United have also now faced more shots in 2024 than any other Premier League club.

Most of Ten Hag’s substitutes – with the exception of Mount – didn’t have an impact. Antony was the first to come on in place of Garnacho, who arguably had one of his worst games in a United shirt.

Casemiro and Mason Mount came on for Mainoo and Rashford respectively.

It’s easy to see why Ratcliffe and his associates are contemplating a parting of ways with Ten Hag. Games like this fully highlight why there is a strong case to be made for a change of guard in the dugout.

The current United boss may still have it within him to change the situation but time is running out.

Sweden and Victor Lindelof bounced back from their mauling at the hands of Portugal to beat Albania 1-0 in their last friendly of the spring.

In an evenly contested game, the Albanians enjoyed the majority of the first half danger moments as they scored an offside goal and thought they had won a penalty early on, but no decision was given.

However, Lindelof’s side got themselves more involved and hit the post in the first half and scored what would prove to be the winner in the 62nd minute through Gustaf Nilsson.

The Swedes had eleven shots to eight but limited their opponents to only one shot on target during the whole game.

The Scandinavians also shaded possession with 51% in favour of the home side.

Lindelof had a nightmare versus Portugal, where he and his fellow defenders were run ragged by a world-class display by Bruno Fernandes.

However, with a score of 7.3 from Sofascore, he was back to his more solid self yesterday.

The Swedish captain was a calming presence at the back and largely dealt with what was thrown his way.

He made three clearances and blocked one goal bound effort.

Lindelof was also strong in the duels, winning 75% of his ground battles and 67% of his aerial tussles.

The centre back also showed remarkable control, as he only gave away one foul all evening, as he looked to show new coach, Jon Dahl Tomasson, that he is the right player to continue leading his nation in the new era.

The 29 year old was also very solid on the ball as he had 64 touches and completed 89% of his passes.

His distribution was not only safe but also threatening, as he completed one key pass in the match.

The Blågult have now finished their international commitments and will have to wait until the 5th June when they take on Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen’s Denmark in a warm-up match before the Euros start.

Unfortunately for Lindelof, neither he nor Sweden will be part of the summer action. He will instead focus his efforts on winning a regular place back in United’s first team as the Red Devils aim to win the FA Cup and finish in the Champions League spots.

The post Victor Lindelof already planning his future beyond Manchester United appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Victor Lindelof has largely been a peripheral figure under Erik ten Hag, with the Manchester United boss opting to trust the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, and Harry Maguire ahead of the Swedish captain.

Despite impressive positional awareness and being a very reliable centre-back with the ball at his feet, Lindelof has struggled to consistently start at the heart of Man United’s backline due to his failure to impose himself physically.

However, he has still managed to remain at Old Trafford for nearly seven years, witnessing multiple managers and many players come and go, owing to his versatility and attitude.

With Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia forced to sit on the sidelines for big parts of the season, Lindelof has made his demonstrated his utility by slotting in at left-back. How that has fared, however, is a debate for another day.

Whether the Swede will manage to stay at United under INEOS remains to be seen. However, he has already started planning to extend his stay in the game.

During a press conference while on international duty, Lindelof revealed that intends to move into coaching after hanging up his boots. Still only 29, he does not intend to waste any time and has already started his coaching education.

Linelof is quoted via Fotboll Skanalen: “I have started an education with some friends in the team in England. It is a regular education. Uefa A, the first.

“You never know what will happen in the future. I think it is better to do it now than after the career so I have done it. If something comes up when you stop, you have done it.” The defender added: “I am not quite there but I hope I have a few years left as a player.”

Much like Lindelof, the club’s hierarchy should also be proactive when it comes to shaping United’s squad for the future.

Accordingly, INEOS must look to cash in on the Swedish international, who is contracted to the Old Trafford outfit until 2025, this summer.

Lindelof’s contract had previously been set to expire at the end of this season, but United chose to activate an automatic twelve month extension in the defender’s deal.

The 29-year-old’s versatility has come in handy a few times, but in order to challenge the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, United need squad players who are not a significant downgrade to their first-choice counterparts.

Victor Lindelof and Sweden’s new era with coach Jon Dahl Tomasson got off to the worst possible start with a heavy defeat to Portugal.

In what was a wonderful performance from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, who bagged a goal and an assist, it was a disaster class by United’s Swedish skipper, Lindelof.

Tomasson threw doubt on the defender’s future as the leader of his country when he claimed that he had to reassess all his options once taking over the reins.

However, there was good news for the centre back as it was revealed a few days ago that he would remain captain.

Elaborating on his decision Tomasson claimed, “it’s a role he’s used to. He’s a player who takes responsibility, plays in a big club and always thinks about the team”.

Unfortunately, that was the only positive from a dismal showing by the Scandinavians, who showed exactly why they will not be taking part in this summer’s Euros tournament.

Portugal won 5-2 even though both sides had 13 shots each and the home side had eight on target in comparison with the away side’s six.

The Swedes also had less of the ball with 45% to Portugal’s 55%.

From a United perspective, Lindelof had a horror show of a game where he played the full 90 minutes in a side that conceded five goals.

Sofascore gave him a 5.8 for his night’s work as he put in an incredibly passive display.

The 29 year old made three clearances and had one interception, but this was the extent of his defensive interaction.

He won zero ground and aerial duels in the match, an incredible statistic that highlights how difficult he found it to make his presence felt against the Portuguese attackers.

The Swede was much stronger on the ball however and did have a highly impressive 93% pass accuracy with 43 of his 46 passes finding their intended target.

He was also involved on the ball as he had 51 touches but failed with his one long ball attempt.

Luckily, it was only a friendly, so the result or performance has no long term relevance but it will be a disheartening way to start the Tomasson era.

The Blågult and Lindelof will aim to dust themselves down and put in a much better performance at home against Albania on Monday night.
