Manchester United fell to a 0-1 defeat at Old Trafford to Arsenal in their 14th league defeat of the season. The result sees United stuck in eighth position, three points behind seventh with two matches left to contest.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Erik ten Hag praised his side’s reaction to Monday night’s mauling at Crystal Palace.

The recurring theme of the question and answer session was the massive injuries his team are suffering and Ten Hag opened up on the damage this has caused his side.

After an horrendous showing on Monday night, Casemiro was at fault for Arsenal’s goal as he lazily failed to get up to the rest of the team’s offside trap, gifting Kai Havertz oceans of space to pick out a cross for Leandro Trossard to bundle in from close range.

Responding to a question on why he played Casemiro again at centre back, Ten Hag said, “I didn’t have options. [Kambwala] was not fit, he was just returning from injury and not fit to start.”

When asked if Scott McTominay could be an option as he has been for Scotland in the past he claimed, “I haven’t seen it but what I heard was not always a success. I think he’s better in that advanced position, higher up the pitch.”

Ten Hag was then asked if being so positive after losing to Arsenal highlighted the state the club was in, to which he retorted, “it shouldn’t be like this. You’re absolutely right. But I return to all the problems we have. When you analyse the performance, you have to see that we were competitive, but not in the way we want of course.”

“We have to win every game but as a club we are not in a position and definitely not with this team with all the injuries we have.”

Elaborating further on the damage injuries have had to his teams progress he stated, “I am now two years here and only one time have I had a full group of players. You can’t progress a team when you have so many injuries, especially in a particular key area.”

“It’s like swimming with your hands on your back. You have to keep your head above the water level and that is what we are trying to do.”

The Red Devils currently occupy eighth place in the table which would mean the Europa Conference League would even beyond them. When asked about the how harmful no European football next season could be he claimed it would be very damaging to the club but stressed that the team still has the opportunity to secure it in spite of the massive problems they face.

Ten Hag did mention two positive issues from the game, the first being the performance of Amad Diallo. When asked about giving the player his first start of the season he said, “I think Amad deserved it.”

The coach claimed that there was much competition in that area of the pitch with Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Marcus Rashford all having minutes on the right, but he was impressed with what he saw from the Ivorian. “He played very well. He was brave, he was creative, he defended very well. We were pleased with his performance,” Ten Hag stated.

Finally, like Monday night, the Dutchman praised the support that the fans showed the team in challenging circumstances: “They understand the situation we are in. Today from the first to the final whistle they were behind us and they see what the problems are and that the team needs backing. So we are united and this is very good.”

If United are to have any chance of salvaging European football, at least from a league position, they need to defeat Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. There is still the prospect of securing Europa League qualification with an FA Cup win against Manchester City but the trajectories of the two teams suggest this will be an incredibly challenging objective.

Manchester United host Arsenal at Old Trafford in what is shaping up to be a high-stakes Premier League clash for both teams.

United will be heading into the game off the back of a devastating 4-0 hammering at the hands of Crystal Palace, which served to pile further pressure and misery on Erik ten Hag and his players.,

The Red Devils have a chance to get back to winning ways and make a huge statement that they’re no pushovers and what better way to do it than against a top rival such as Arsenal?

Here are three storylines to anticipate as the two English giants prepare to lock horns on Sunday.

United can put an end to Arsenal’s title ambitions

Arsenal will undoubtedly turn up at the Theatre of Dreams fully aware that a win guarantees that the Premier League title race will go into the final game of the league season when they face Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners don’t have it in their hands, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the driving seat. Arsenal are almost certainly relying on a slip-up from the reigning champions in their remaining clashes vs. Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham for the most prestigious trophy in the land to be decorated in red and white ribbons.

Mikel Arteta and his men are firm favourites to emerge victorious, especially considering United’s consistently poor performances and results, yet the Arsenal boss himself will know that Old Trafford has not been happy hunting grounds since he took over the reins at the North London outfit.

Arteta managed to secure Arsenal’s only triumph at Old Trafford in the league since 2006 but has the only one to his name, in a long line of shocking and disappointing results, which if repeated, would be fatal for his side.

Arsenal have lost on their last two trips to Old Trafford and needed two injury-time goals to complete their 3-1 win in the reverse fixture back in September.

This could be just the motivation Ten Hag needs to motivate his players when they step onto the pitch on Sunday. United have the golden opportunity to put a significant dent in Arsenal’s title prospects, almost in the same way they did against Liverpool in the 2-2 draw last month.

It will certainly not be easy for United against an Arsenal side that have smashed in 27 goals and conceded just thrice in three of their last games on the road. City are the only team who have kept them at bay and prevented them from clinching all three points.

Arteta spoke to reporters and was asked about United’s form and Arsenal’s Old Trafford record. The Spaniard said, “I don’t think about it, every game has a different context. We know the difficulty and the history when you look at what we’ve done over there, so we’re going to have to be at our best to earn the right to win the game.”

“We know what we need to do but first of all we have to perform at a really high level to deserve to win the match. That’s what the focus is.”

In a season marked by disappointment, the United players have a chance to reclaim some dignity and bring a glimmer of joy to fans by scuppering Arsenal’s title push. The stage is set and the battle lines drawn.

Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes return from injury

Ten Hag is set to be significantly boosted by the return of Rashford, McTominay and Fernandes.

All three stars have recovered from injury and are in contention to return to United’s starting XI for the game against Arsenal.

Rashford has not featured for the 20-time English champions since the dramatic win on penalties vs. Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final.

Despite his struggles this season, he’s still a threat to any rival and brings something different to the team. The England international’s outstanding record vs. the traditional “big six” is also well-known and he could have a big say in how events pan out on Sunday.

Rashford has also been linked to Arsenal, with his United future uncertain. He may have returned just in time to haunt the North London club and inflict the ultimate pain on them.

Even more important is that Rashford being back means United can field their most potent front three alongside Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho on the right.

Another big player set to come back into the action is Fernandes. The club captain wasn’t in the matchday squad for the clash at Selhurst Park and was a huge miss.

United lacked the imagination and creativity he often injects into the side. Before he was sidelined, Fernandes was in terrific form and even received a nomination for the Premier League’s April Player of the Month award. This term, he has plundered an impressive 15 goals and 11 assists across all competitions and he could be United’s main point of difference vs. Arsenal.

McTominay is also likely to play from the start and despite obvious reservations about him in the middle of the park, his eye for goal and turning up at the right place and at the right time are undeniable.

The Carrington academy graduate is enjoying the most prolific campaign of his career and very few people would put it past him to once again get on the score sheet this weekend.

United looking to get European aspirations back on track

United’s European aspirations suffered a huge hit following their loss to Palace.

The result left the Reds in eighth position in the Premier League and 13 points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Champions League qualification is mathematically impossible for United but the Europa League remains an attainable objective, although there is stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle and Chelsea who are in fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

A win over Arsenal would go a long way in cementing United’s Europa League credentials and this is something the players will have on the back of their minds as they do battle with Arsenal.

Needless to say, getting into the Europa Conference League would be humiliating for United but they would have no one to blame but themselves.

]]>

An injury-ravaged Manchester United are all set to take on the Premier League’s top scorers Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday and manager Erik ten Hag has asked his players to play through the pain barrier to try and avoid humiliation.

The team did endure a nightmare last Monday as Crystal Palace thrashed them 0-4 with the Red Devils forced to play with their 14th different centre-back combination of Jonny Evans and Casemiro against the Eagles as Harry Maguire missed out.

Currently, almost the entire first-choice back four remains sidelined and the Dutchman hinted that he would not risk Lisandro Martinez from the start against the Gunners despite the Argentine’s wish to play.

The World Cup winner has suffered enough from being rushed back into action too soon and the plan is to try and keep him fit for the FA Cup final.

EtH wants more commitment from injured stars

However, the likes of Evans, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford, both of whom also returned to training recently, will hopefully try and make themselves available for selection from the start.

Ten Hag had publicly praised the Northern Ireland international, the Scot as well as Maguire for their ability to play through the pain barrier for the club and hopefully, a few more will raise their hands as the season finale approaches.

“Erik ten Hag wants his walking wounded to play through the pain and avoid a massacre by Arsenal,” wrote Neil Custis of The Sun.

“Ten Hag hopes his stars will be more “robust” and put up their hands for selection when he assembles his struggling squad on Saturday morning unless they have a serious injury.”

Players have often taken the easy way out at this club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, a habit that the incompetent Glazers have allowed to fester and something that needs to be ended.

However, there is the risk that the additional load could lead to a further breakdown. The former Ajax coach wants more, which should be the norm, but considering the injury record this season, this might not be the best approach.

Major injury issues at the club

This season has been a disaster in terms of injuries with more than 60 separate cases of injury or illness with skipper Bruno Fernandes missing the Palace game, the first game he has ever missed because of injury since joining the club.

The medical department has been a joke with plenty of players prefering to diagnose their problems through their own doctors instead of trusting the club’s medical team.

The manager’s training methods are also under the scanner with the players frequently complaining about the training regimen as well as the running demands.

INEOS are far from impressed with the disarray at the club and Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ordered a probe into the injury issues at the club. They are also in the middle of overhauling the medical department.

Every manager that has been at Manchester United has seen their tenure end in misery and defeat, leading to an eventual departure.

However, that doesn’t mean there haven’t been any high points in their tenures. Even David Moyes started off by winning the Community Shield!

The players similarly hold some managers in higher regard than the others, even more so if the person in the dugout kickstarted their careers.

No wonder, then, that Scott McTominay picked Jose Mourinho as the manager who will always be special to him.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, McTominay said Mourinho will always be “a hero of mine” and he will be “forever grateful for what he did for me”.

The Scotland international revealed that even his grandparents “love” Mourinho and they have a picture in their house of McTominay standing alongside the Portuguese on his debut.

He said: “They loved him because he gave me that moment. He gave me that initial opportunity, so he will always be a hero of mine. I’ll be forever grateful for everything that he did for me.”

It doesn’t come as a surprise how highly the United midfielder rates Mourinho as he remains the one and only winner of the “Manager’s Player of the Season” award!

Mourinho memorably invented the award after a season for the sole purpose of recognising McTominay’s efforts for him and till the end, when the dressing room turned toxic, the player remained as one of his trusted lieutenants.

McTominay lifted the lid on how the then-manager helped him navigate senior football in the beginning.

He said: “I remember that when I first started training with the first team, I got into an argument with a couple of the senior players over the way a small-sided game was going.

“I was only 17 or 18 at the time, but I wasn’t happy that our team was losing and maybe I went too far. Jose pulled me aside and said, ‘You can’t speak to the senior professionals like that.’ He told me that they would respect me for standing up for myself and having that fire in the belly, but I had to get them onside first.

“I think he knew my reaction came from a good place – because I wanted to do well. It gave me a lot to think about when I went back to my digs that night.”

Multiple managers have come and gone since Mourinho but McTominay has remarkably emerged as a player who has been a trusted presence for every single one of them.

Perhaps that growth and personality is what Mourinho embedded in him when he was starting out in football which is why he holds a special place in his heart.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has revealed that the injury he picked up against Burnley is nothing serious and he’s hoping to make a return to action as soon as possible.

United were held to a 1-1 draw by the Clarets on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Antony gave the Red Devils the lead in the 79th minute but as has been the case for large parts of the campaign, the team could not hold on and surrendered their advantage soon after.

Andre Onana was judged to have wiped out a Burnley player and a penalty was awarded to the visiting side. Zeke Amdouni made no mistake from the spot-kick to ensure the spoils were shared.

Beyond the result, the other thing that raised concerns among the fanbase was McTominay’s injury. He was brought on by Ten Hag in the second half to try and make a difference but he didn’t finish the match.

The Scotland international hobbled off in pain during injury time with what seemed like a knock.

After the game, Ten Hag spoke to reporters and said, “We have to assess this, to set the diagnosis. I don’t know in this moment to return [against Crystal Palace next month], I think it’s a little bit too quick turnaround.”

“You have seen he has a problem. We have to diagnose this and see what it is.”

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that there were fears McTominay would miss United’s next Premier League clash against the in-form Crystal Palace at Selhurst Palace.

The Carrington academy has taken to social media and given a massive update on his fitness.

The midfielder wrote on Instagram, “I slipped and fell awkward on my knee similar to against Chelsea.”

“Nothing serious just hyperextension but I was angry and upset that I thought it was worse than it was.”

He added, “Hoping to be back on the pitch very soon to help the team as much as I can.”

The news will come as a huge relief to all United fans, Ten Hag and his coaching staff, who have had to deal with several key players missing multiple games this term due to physical setbacks.

Manchester United conceded yet another late goal as they were held to a 1-1 draw by 19th placed Burnley in their Premier League game at Old Trafford on Saturday.

After displaying a certain degree of control and patience against Sheffield United in midweek, the hope was the team would continue in the same vein against the Clarets.

But Erik ten Hag seems to be doubling down and the team reverted to type and chaos ball ensued with both teams taking turns in attacking.

Vincent Kompany’s men found it very easy to bypass the entire United press, much like all other teams this season, and if not for some fine saves from Andre Onana, an even bigger shock was in store.

McTominay’s injury

Searching for the opener, Ten Hag once again turned to super sub Scott McTominay and even played him as an auxiliary striker at times.

The goal eventually came from Antony while the Scot ended up suffering an injury and he was seen grimacing in pain and appeared to indicate it was a serious injury.

The substitute had to be subbed off in added time and he headed straight down the tunnel as fit-again Mason Mount entered the fray.

After the game, Ten Hag said the midfielder is unlikely to be fit for the Crystal Palace game and while prognosis is still on, both United and Scotland are holding their breaths over the final outcome.

“We have to assess this, to set the diagnosis. I don’t know in this moment to return [against Crystal Palace next month],” Ten Hag was quoted as saying.

“I think it’s a little bit too quick turnaround. You have seen he has a problem. We have to diagnose this and see what it is.”

Big blow for both United and Scotland

It is no secret that McTominay’s goals have been worth 12 extra points for the Red Devils and with the FA Cup final coming up, he could be a huge miss. He is even more crucial for Scotland who are gearing up for this summer’s European Championships.

As many as nine key players are missing for United and injuries have played a key role in a disastrous season for the club and the manager.

Ten Hag will be hoping to get back McTominay before the Wembley showpiece event due to his knack for coming up with crucial goals.

The player’s future, however, remains uncertain. There have been rumours of a possible sale while other reports have indicated INEOS’ desire to keep the academy graduate and offer him a new deal on improved terms.

Christian Eriksen has criticised Manchester United’s late game decisions once again this season.

The Dane was starting two consecutive matches for the first time in months and tried in vain to be the creative spark that gave the Red Devils the victory.

A 1-1 draw with Burnley has almost sealed United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League next year and they have a real fight on their hands to even keep the Europa League place with Newcastle snapping at their heels behind.

Tough looking fixtures away to Crystal Palace and Brighton, as well as home fixtures against the Magpies and Arsenal hardly scream 12 points either.

Speaking to MUTV (via The Manchester Evening News) after the game, Eriksen reflected on his side’s and his own poor decisions in the match.

“We had the three points in our hands going into the last minutes of ordinary time. We should be able to keep a clean sheet and get the win”.

“I still think there could be some bits that could be better [in my own performance]. I made a few decisions that could be better, putting my teammate or myself in a better area around the pitch”.

When asked about how he felt after playing for the first time consecutively for many months he retorted, “I’m trying to do my best and like you said, I haven’t had as much game time. When you’re playing, you have to do your best and that’s what I’m trying to do”.

The Denmark international was then asked about the nine day break that awaits this United side when they are not in action now until Monday 6th May.

Eriksen claimed it would be “full focus” on recovery. “First of all, it’s going to be weird because it’s going to be a long week without games, but hopefully it’s going to make everyone ready and fit for the game at Palace”.

“Some days off, some training, get your mental and physical ready and go again. You love playing games, it’s what you always want to do, and every day, so it’s different”.

“But sometimes, of course, you need a bit of a rest to recover and prepare for the next game and it depends on what the manager is going to do in training sessions”.

With Scott McTominay picking up an injury, and United’s centre back injury crisis still in full swing, it is possible that the former Tottenham man will continue to get some rare chances to impress Erik ten Hag as we enter the final month of a long and gruelling season.

]]>

Erik ten Hag has claimed that the Old Trafford crowd do not understand certain elements of the game after some of his substitutions were audibly booed in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley.

Once again, United struggled not only in performance but also in result, as they conceded yet another late equaliser from the penalty spot.

Antony had finally given United the lead after 79 minutes but they could only hold onto it for eight minutes as Casemiro and Andre Onana combined to give away a needless penalty, which Zeki Amdouni converted.

A recurrent theme of Erik ten Hag’s pre and post-match interviews and press conferences as of late are his refusal to admit that the problem is bigger than it really is.

Once again, he praised the football and told BBC Sport, “we are one of the most dynamic and entertaining teams in the league at this moment”.

“We are creating loads of chances by playing good football. Every team gives up opportunities. But when it is up to us, it is weird”.

Yes, Manchester United have scored a lot more goals recently, after struggling all season to find the net but once more, the Dutchman has missed the point as teams do not give up as many chances as Manchester United, as they have given up more opportunities that any team in Europe’s top five leagues.

Ten Hag is certainly feeling the pressure as it has been reported that new technical director, Jason Wilcox, is currently carrying out an audit on his performance before the season ends.

Speaking to beIN Sports after the match, Ten Hag hardly endeared himself to the crowd.

When popular youngster Kobbie Mainoo was subbed off after 64 minutes, the Old Trafford crowd expressed its displeasure with the manager’s decision.

Referring to the incident after the game the former Ajax man claimed, “the crowd doesn’t understand”.

“It’s a 19-year-old boy, first Premier League season, third game in a week. We have to manage the game”.

“We don’t want to be injured. Last season I had two bad injuries, you could see he got tired”.

“I want to protect him and of course”.

The under-fire manager continued to defend his decision to bring on Scott McTominay, who ironically then went off injured by stating, “the game was really open, it was one-on-one over the whole pitch, a really intense game, and Kobbie got tired”.

“With Scott, you bring fresh legs and he’s very good in making attacks, making movements and runs through the middle”.

While there is much more logic to Ten Hag’s argument about the Mainoo substitution than the playing well opinion, these sort of statements will only help erode any confidence that match-going fans have in the manager.

Calling them out publicly and claiming they don’t understand will do nothing but help further dig his own grave at Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay is a well-respected figure at Manchester United and his season’s performance means he is highly unlikely to be sold this window.

This was not the case for Scott the Scot during the last summer window when he was the subject of interest from both West Ham and Bayern Munich.

In fact, the Hammers even offered a joint bid for both McTominay and Harry Maguire at one point, and were widely expected to complete a deal for the Scottish international with United believed to be keen to cash in.

However, no move came to pass and, in a remarkable turnaround, the 27 year old has enjoyed his most prolific season to date at the club, scoring 10 goals in all competitions. This means he is one of only three Red Devils to break double figures this year, alongside Rasmus Hojlund and Bruno Fernandes – both on 13 strikes.

His knack of scoring important goals was once again highlighted at the weekend when he opened the scoring with a great run, courtesy of a sublime cross by Diogo Dalot.

Nonetheless, despite his heroics in the opposition box, McTominay’s midfield credentials are still very much in doubt.

United’s middle of the park has been a sieve for most of the season with the Scottish international a prominent part of this, yet he has also distinguished himself as a serious goal threat making late runs into the penalty area. In a rather bizarre manner, United often play far worse with McTominay in midfield, but are simultaneously far more likely to score with him on the pitch.

Journalist Dean Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that “Scott McTominay is not one of the players United will actively look to offload in the summer. His goal in the FA Cup semi-final has become pretty symbolic of how he can impact games”.

According to Jones, the 27 year old is not seen as a crucial cog in the starting line-up, but more in the lines of an important rotation piece.

“Even though I don’t expect him to be a regular starter in the team going forward, I know that he is still very well respected within the club and that there are figures who feel it would be silly to lose a homegrown product like him who understands the club and also can be effective when used properly”.

It is also believed that McTominay’s situation is not tied to Maguire’s and that he has a more secure future at Old Trafford compared to the defender.

“He and Maguire are always talked about as having their future on the line at United, and I think that’s still the case for Maguire, but not so much for McTominay”.

He has made 246 appearances for the Red Devils to date and looks like he could be set to continue at the club for the foreseeable future. The player’s acceptance that he is unlikely to be a first-choice player, but more of an impact substitute, may just save his career at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay were both reportedly struggling with their respective movements as they left Wembley, following Manchester United’s lucky FA Cup semi-final win against Coventry City.

United surrendered their superior three-goal lead as Coventry fought back to force the game into extra time.

Mark Robins’ side came close to winning it on a few occasions – they hit the crossbar and saw a winning goal in the 121st minute ruled out by a VAR call due to an extremely tight offside decision.

Both teams had to settle for a penalty shootout and luckily, Erik ten Hag’s men demonstrated a much stronger mentality when they stepped up to the spot despite Casemiro not starting things off well.

United are now through to the FA Cup final, where they will face Manchester City later in May for the privilege of lifting the domestic cup.

Despite the woeful overall performance and the embarrassing capitulation fans were subjected to by the team, the other major worry was Rashford and McTominay’s injury concerns.

Both players were named in the starting XI by Ten Hag but didn’t make it until the final whistle. Rashford, who was very poor, was taken off in the 97th minute and replaced by Amad Diallo. The Ivorian winger saw played in extra time.

McTominay featured for 103 minutes before he was also forced off with what seemed like an injury. Carrington academy graduate Omari Forson came on in the Scotland international’s place.

Like McTominay, Rashford appeared uncomfortable while making his way to the touchline.

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, McTominay was “walking gingerly” through the mixed zone.

United correspondent for The Daily Mail, Nathan Salt, also gave an update on Rashford and indicated that the Englishman limped his way through the mixed zone.

Salt also posted a video of Rashford on X (formerly Twitter), in which the 26-year-old was struggling to walk freely.

Hopefully for United and Ten Hag, it’s nothing serious and both Rashford and McTominay will be available for the club’s clash against Sheffield United later this week on Wednesday.

Should they be sidelined, the duo will join an extensive injury list that currently consists of players like Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Jonny Evans, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
