Manchester United’s impressive loanee Will Fish is in a race against time to make Hibernian’s home match against Aberdeen this Saturday.

The young defender has once again been a mainstay of the Hibs’ defence and, for the second consecutive year, he has been a vital cog in their success this season.

Fish has managed to play 45 times this season in all competitions but he recently had to be subbed off after 24 minutes versus St Johnstone with an injury problem.

The Edinburgh Evening News report that “Will Fish is still working his way back from the back injury that kept him out of the loss to Ross County.”

The Hibernian coach, Nick Montgomery added that the injury “is a bit worse than we thought, another innocuous one, just heading the ball. It’s a twinge in his back – but backs are always difficult until they settle down.”

The 21 year old has been lucky so far with his injury record as he has managed to play 65 times over two seasons for Hibernian, and has become familiar with the rough and tumble of the Scottish league.

The side from Easter Road are currently top of the relegation split table and there are three matches left to play in the season, where Fish will certainly be aiming to play a part in.

The 21-year-old Mancunian recently gave an interview where he left the door open for a return to his parent club United in the summer: “I take it step by step and whatever happens in the summer, I don’t know. But I’ve loved every minute of playing for Hibs.”

United have desperately struggled this season with no centre back at the club managing to stay consistently fit or play well for an extended period of time.

This can be seen in the team conceding 55 goals so far in this campaign with an embarrassing record 13 losses already in the league – the worst a United team has managed in the Premier League era.

There is also a strong possibility that multiple defenders, such as Raphael Varane, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire, could leave in the summer window, with replacements needed if so.

Perhaps the academy product will believe he can come back in pre-season and convince Erik ten Hag or a new manager that he could be the player to stand up for his boyhood club.

Manchester United loanee Will Fish has spoken out on his disappointment with Hibernian’s finish to phase one of the Scottish Premiership and suggested he has no idea what the future brings in regard to his playing career.

The 21 year old has played 65 times for the Easter Road side over two seasons and gained valuable experience along the way.

Fish has regularly been one of the Edinburgh side’s most important players and once again, put in a fine defensive display against Motherwell last Saturday.

Musing on his future, footballscotland report that he said, “I haven’t really given it much thought, to be honest”.

“I take it step by step and whatever happens in the summer, I don’t know. But I’ve loved every minute of playing for Hibs”.

The Mancunian born defender went on to express regret to how the season ended, with the Hibees only winning three league games in 2024.

“My focus this season was here and do the best I can for the club. But I feel like I’ve failed because the team is now in the bottom six. I’ve played in a lot of those games, but no one out there ever gives less than 100 per cent”.

“We’ve had a few things go against us and sloppy moments like this one in the last minute have cost us. I’d never say it’s down to lack of effort or training, but that’s football and it hurts. I’ve focused on this season, and this season only, for now”.

Despite where his future may lie, Fish claimed he would do everything he could to finish the season on a high and win the five remaining games the Easter Road outfit have to play in the second phase of the season.

The youngster also threw his support behind current coach, Nick Montgomery.

“It’s not something that’s crossed my mind – or any of the players’ minds – that the management team can’t be successful at this club, because we see it day in and day out. They’re tactical in their thoughts, in their training and in the amount of effort they put into making us better. Everyone can see that”.

The youngster finally set out what the club should aim to achieve in the future and it is much more adventurous than a seventh place finish.

“Results have gone against us, though, and it’s not worked out. We want to be third and we want to be playing in Europe. We’ve had some great days and away days in Europe which will stick with me forever. That’s where this club should be and the players can only apologise for not achieving that this year”.

There is no doubt that Fish’s loan has been a rare example of a functioning one for Manchester United. Of course, there have been highs and lows but he has played 90 minutes consistently and in two years, he has transformed himself into one of the club’s most vital players.

In a season where United have struggled massively with injuries, especially at centre back, Fish could well have been an option alongside Willy Kambwala to boost the depleted ranks.

If the youngster does return to United in pre-season, he will no doubt feel he has a shot of breaking into the first team with the future of so many defenders at the club less than certain.

Will Fish returned to form in a big way after playing a key role in Hibernian’s heart-breaking 1-1 draw away to Motherwell.

Hibs were unable to get the win they needed to stand a chance of finishing in the top six of the first phase of the Scottish Premiership.

They took the lead in the 65th minute from the penalty spot, but were denied the win with an 94th minute strike from Shane Blaney.

In an even contest, both teams had eight shots on goal and Motherwell slightly edged possession with 51% of the ball.

Hibs defended well as the team from Fir Park only managed one shot on target, unfortunately it would be a devastating blow.

Fish had to be subbed off at half-time in his last game due to a virus but he had recovered in time to put in an impressive display for his side this afternoon.

The young defender was given an impressive score of 7.7 on Sofascore for his efforts.

He played a key role in keeping out Motherwell until effectively the last kick of the day and contributed massively to Hibs’ goal.

It was the central defender who won the penalty that Myziane Maolida converted to give the Easter Road side the lead.

Fish also almost scored his second goal of the campaign with his one shot off target.

However, it was defensively where he really shone. He made a massive nine clearances in the encounter and blocked one goal bound effort.

The Mancunian was a wall in defence, as he won 100% of his ground duels and three out of his five aerial battles.

Fish also made two successful passes in the encounter.

He was not as productive with the ball as usual, only touching the ball 47 times and attempting 27 passes.

He was successful in 19 of them, giving him a passing accuracy of 70%.

Hibs will now have to wait to see who they play after the rest of matchday 33 games are complete. As they can finish no higher than 7th, they will play the five teams below them once to finish the current campaign and complete phase two of the league.

Whilst it was a bitterly disappointing end for his side, Fish will be glad that he was able to bounce back from last week’s setback and continue to be a crucial player for the Edinburgh club.

The youngster will be heartened from the progression of defenders like Willy Kambwala at Manchester United and will fancy his chances that he can give Erik ten Hag something to think about this pre-season.

Manchester United loanee Will Fish only played 45 minutes as Hibernian suffered a 2-1 loss at the hands of St Johnstone.

Fish was named in the starting XI by Nick Montgomery alongside Rocky Bushiri Kiranga at the heart of the Hibs’ backline.

The Carrington academy graduate has started 100% of Hibs’ league matches this season (32) – such has been his importance to the side and Montgomery.

The Easter Road outfit were sunk on this occasion by St Johnstone, whose goals were grabbed by Adama Sidibeh and Tony Gallacher, who found the back of the net with nine minutes of normal time left on the clock.

Hibs’ only goal was scored by Chris Cadden. The full-back slotted it in a parried save from St Johnstone goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov after the shot-stopper failed to bring a shot from Myziane Maolida under his spell.

The result has left the Hibees in seventh position in the Scottish Premiership, one point below Dundee United who have a game in hand.

During the 45 minutes he was on the pitch, Fish made just one clearance and as many interceptions.

The centre-back failed to register a block or make a tackle. He delved into one ground duel, which he lost.

Fish was required to contest three challenges in the air. He came out on top on two occasions. The 21-year-old had 50 touches of the ball to his name.

He found his Hibs teammates with 35 of the 40 passes he attempted, managing a pass completion rate of 88%.

Fish tried to deliver one cross and four long balls. He found his intended target with the cross and two of the long balls he pinged.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

The United loanee was taken off with the score still at 0-0 and was replaced by Nathan Moriah-Welsh. The Guyana international saw out the rest of the game.

It was undeniably a disappointing performance for Fish and Hibs. As the inquest into the events at Easter Road begins, it will be intriguing to discover the rationale behind Montgomery’s decision to substitute Fish, whether due to injury or another factor like a knock.

Up next for Montgomery’s men is an away trip to face Motherwell in seven day’s time.

Manchester United loanee, Will Fish, put in a solid display in spite of Hibernian’s 1-3 loss to Rangers at Ibrox.

The academy graduate has recently spoken on how much he is learning as a defender playing regularly in the Scottish Premier League (SPL), and Rangers are currently the toughest examination in Scottish football.

Hibs held on well but were under the cosh against the league leaders for the majority of the game.

The Glasgow side had 24 shots while Hibs could only muster six. The home side were able to get eight of those on target while the away side only managed one shot on target, their solitary goal of the contest.

The Ibrox side dominated the ball as they had 61% of the possession.

However, Hibs were resolute and the Gers could only be sure of the points in the 85th minute when Rabbi Matondo curled in a spectacular third.

Fish was, as usual, a big reason behind Hibs’ solid defensive display for most of the match against their superior opponents.

The only action that the United player might reflect on is when Cyriel Dessers was able to peel off of him and head home from close range for Rangers’ second goal just on the stroke of half-time.

Sofascore gave the player a rating of 6.8 for his afternoon’s work.

The 21 year old stood up to the Rangers attack as he made eight clearances and blocked three shots.

He won 100% of his aerial duels and 50% of his ground battles.

As usual, he was more than willing to get on the ball as he had 57 touches with a decent passing accuracy of 78%.

Moreover, 50% of his ten long ball attempts found their intended target as Hibernian tried to punish the league leaders on the counter-attack.

Next up for the central defender and his team is a home match against St Johnstone, where they will be looking to get back to winning ways and reclaim their sixth place in the league which they relinquished to Dundee with yesterday’s defeat.

The post Hibernian boss admits they’re facing a fight to keep Man United’s Will Fish amidst interest from bigger clubs appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

Hibernian manager Nick Montgomery has confirmed that his side will certainly attempt to keep Manchester United loanee Will Fish beyond the end of the season but acknowledged they face stiff competition from bigger clubs.

Fish is currently on his second loan spell with Hibs and is impressing at Easter Road.

The defender has cemented his status as one of the club’s most important players and certainly one of the first names on the team sheet.

Fish has amassed an impressive 30 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this term. He has started in all 30 matches. The United loanee has registered one goal and as many assists in that time.

A previous report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that former United coaches Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick – who are currently the managers of Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough respectively –  are set to battle it out for Fish in the summer.

McKenna and Carrick previously worked with Fish at Old Trafford and know the player very well and what he can do on the pitch.

Nick Montgomery spoke to Edinburgh News and acknowledged the mounting interest in Fish from clubs in the Championship.

The Hibs boss admitted that while Fish might feel that he has to move on, he will undoubtedly look back on his time at Easter Road very fondly.

Montgomery said, “If this is his last season, no doubt he’ll look back on it with really fond memories of building his character. But, for Will, I don’t think he really needs a pitch from us. He really enjoys playing for Hibs. He really loves the club, and I think he enjoys the way we play.”

“Ultimately, it’s going to be down to what options he has. And there are probably going to be other clubs looking at his form this season, his games here.”

“We are a big club. So, for Will, it’s going to be what is going to be the best option for him. We’re definitely going to be one of those options. But I’m sure there will be many others. And, whatever happens, we’ll support Will in what that looks like.”

The 42-year-old coach added, “Will has really enjoyed his time here. I think he’s developed a lot and improved a lot. Right now he’s a player contracted to Man United. But I don’t think you can question Will’s commitment to Hibs. I think he’s given every piece of himself to the club since he arrived, certainly since I’ve been at the club, anyway.”

Montgomery explained that at the end of the campaign, a conversation will be held between Fish, his agent and United to try and find a solution.

“No doubt, if there was an opportunity to explore, that’s something we’ve already spoken to Will about. But right now that’s something that we won’t discuss until the season is finished. Then we’ll look at the situation as a whole.”

Fish is under contract with the Red Devils until the summer of 2025.

The 20-time English champions also retain an option to trigger a 12-month extension clause on his deal. It seems that United are in a strong position to ask for a sizeable fee to permanently part with the 21-year-old’s services.

It’s the middle of the March international break, but that has not stopped Manchester United fans from waxing lyrical about Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

The pair played a crucial role in Man United’s comeback win over Liverpool last weekend, sending Jurgen Klopp’s men packing from the FA Cup and securing a semi-final clash against Coventry City.

Garnacho’s electric showing from the left wing in Argentina’s 3-0 win over El Salvador and Mainoo’s promising late cameo against Brazil have both attracted plenty of attention from United fans.

Such is the history and DNA of the club that academy stars tend to get more love as well as attention from United supporters.

The international break, in particular, also allows fans to follow the progress of academy talents who have been loaned out to continue their development elsewhere.

On that note, United would certainly be pleased to know that local Manchester lad Will Fish is having a promising season with Hibernian FC.

The central defender, who has been on the club’s books since he was seven years old, moved to the Scottish outfit last summer, having also played for them during the 2022-23 season. He recently sat with the Manchester Evening News to talk about his time in Scotland.

“I think it was the best decision I could have made. I did not really know how big the club was before I went but I soon realised,” he said, reflecting on his decision to depart United in the summer of 2022 to gain experience in senior football.

The second stint has proven to be even more promising for Fish, allowing him to get the taste of European football. He made five appearances for Hibernian in the Europa Conference League, facing the likes of FC Luzern and Aston Villa.

“In terms of what I have learned, I think for me, especially with the position I play, it was more trying to get the experience of playing against different strikers and when you are under the cosh and have to see out three points, just that little bit of know-how and experience that I needed to add,” he said.

According to the outlet, staff at United see his loan stint as ‘very successful’ due to the volume of games played. He has featured in 30 league games this term.

Fish is considered ‘very calm and really mature for his age’ and the way he has established himself as one of Hibernian’s key cogs further underlines that perception.

During the last pre-season, Ten Hag handed him minutes against Leeds, Lyon, and Wrexham. On the back of another promising stint, it will not surprise many if he is again handed plenty of opportunities to impress this summer by the United gaffer.

Manchester United’s on-loan defender Will Fish produced a superb performance at the back as Hibernian cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win against Livingston.

Goals from Jordan Obita and Myziane Maolida within the opening seven minutes of action gave Hibernian an early lead and put them in firm control of the fixture.

Adam Le Fondre’s third of the match all but confirmed the Scottish Premiership outfit’s victory at Easter Road.

Fish started in a back-four also consisting of Christopher Cadden, Rocky Bushiri Kiranga and one of the scorers, Obita.

The Carrington academy graduate made four crucial clearances that helped Hibs keep the clean sheet. He also came up with as many interceptions.

The centre-back put in one successful tackle.

Fish was not dribbled past even once by any of the Livingston players – such was the level of his rock-solid display at home.

He delved into four ground duels and won half of them.

In the air, Fish competed for three duels. He won just one of these challenges.

The 21-year-old registered a total of 76 touches of the ball in what was an all-involved and comprehensive performance from him.

Fish attempted 63 passes from the back. He successfully delivered 56 of these and managed an impressive pass accuracy of 89%.

The Englishman also tried to ping six long balls. Four reached where he intended them to – an outstanding show of his technical ability.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

He has now made 30 appearances for Hibs in the Premiership. That is, he has featured in every league match so far. 28 of these have seen Fish named in the starting XI.

The United man has helped his side keep nine clean sheets. His importance to Nick Montgomery is undeniable.

Will Fish’s Hibernian failed to make their dominance count last night as they were denied the win by a 98th minute equaliser from Ross County.

The United loanee’s side had 11 shots to six and 57% of the ball, but still could only manage a 2-2 draw at the Global Energy Stadium.

The Edinburgh-based side fell behind in the 42nd minute after a goalkeeping howler let the unmarked Josh Sims to guide the ball home. However, the Easter Road side responded well and equalised through Myziane Maolida and thought they had snatched the win in the 77th minute through Adam Le Fondre.

However, it was not to be as they gave up a late goal and had to share the spoils.

20-year-old Fish was almost able to make a vital goal-line clearance but the ball slipped agonisingly underneath his outstretched foot.

Other than this failed clearance, the other only real notable moment in the match for Fish was a long range shot in the first half.

The tall defender found himself in an unfamiliar position just outside the box. On receiving the ball he pirouetted elegantly and fired off a first time shot that bounced just agonisingly wide of the bottom right post, with the keeper well beaten.

In general, the United loanee had a quieter game than usual, not making his mark defensively as he usually does. It must also be remembered that Hibs usually do not dominate their opposition, so there is normally more chance for Fish to boost his defensive statistics with clearances and blocks.

The academy product was given a score of 6.7 for his night’s work on Sofascore, making three clearances and an interception.

The defender was poor in his usual strong suit of aerial dominance, as he only won 33% of his six battles in the air.

Furthermore, he only won 50% of his ground duels.

He had a mixed night in possession as he gave the ball away eight times but had impressive passing statistics. He had 59 touches of the ball and a passing accuracy of 81%.

He was also able to connect with seven out of nine long balls.

The young defender will hope for a better day at the office when Hibernian return home to face Livingston on Saturday afternoon, who are rock bottom of the Scottish Premier League. The Hibees fall to seventh place, one point behind Dundee.

Manchester United loanee, Will Fish, extended his fine run of games for Hibernian as they picked up another good victory in their recent mini-revival of form.

The Hibees have won three of their last five and picked up solid away draws versus Aberdeen and their Edinburgh rivals, Heart of Midlothian during that time.

The side from Easter Road put Ross County to the sword on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory and as usual, Fish was a key cog in his side’s performance.

The United loanee has played 28 games this season and he has started every single one, highlighting the fact he is one of the first names on the team sheet at just 21 years of age.

Hibs controlled the match as they had 14 shots to County’s four and also enjoyed a rare 65% of the ball. However they had to wait for the opening goal, despite the domination, as it only arrived after a defensive mix up in the 59th minute.

Myziane Maolida benefitted from poor keeping and prodded the ball into an empty net. Former United man Dylan Levitt then put the icing on the cake with a smart finish in the 86th minute.

Fish had a reasonably relaxed day’s work due to the lack of threat Ross County posed, but carried out his work with a professional attitude.

The Mancunian was given a good score of 7.4 on Sofascore and made an impressive six clearances.

The defender also guarded his goal in efficient style, with one blocked shot and one interception during the 90 minutes of play.

The sturdy centre back also won five out of his nine aerial duels, but did not have much to do in regard to tackling as he didn’t have to complete any.

Fish also continued his clean play as he only committed one foul in the entire game.

As per usual, the United academy product was solid on the ball, as he enjoyed a massive 76 touches and had an impressive 88% passing accuracy, as he kept the ball ticking over nicely for the Hibees.

He also connected on 60% of his long ball attempts, showing off his improving passing range.

The youngster still only has one goal to his name this season, but that is not for the lack of trying. The defender is always a threat from set pieces and he had two shots blocked by the opposition defence.

Hibs and Fish will look to continue their fine form when they take on Rangers in the quarter finals of the Scottish Cup next Sunday, which will certainly be the academy product’s biggest game of the season to date.
