Joe Hugill and Burton Albion finished a miserable season with a 3-0 away defeat to Fleetwood Town yesterday.

The Brewers had already been assured of their safety after mid-week results went their way and they finished the season in 20th place, two points above safety in League One.

The away side were 2-0 down after 31 minutes and in truth, were rarely in the game.

They did have 13 shots to the home side’s 15 but only managed to have three of them on target.

The away team also had less of the ball as they shared 44% of the possession.

Manchester United loanee Hugill has been poor of late and it was no surprise that he once again found himself on the bench, in what will be his last game for Burton.

The 20 year old was able to play 39 minutes of the second half and got himself more involved than he has been of late, scoring 6.8 on Sofascore.

The United academy once more failed to have any sort of shot on goal in what has been a very poor goalscoring return. One goal in 18 league matches is not the sort of return any striker is looking for.

However, he did get himself more involved in the build-up play as he had 19 touches of the ball and completed five of his eight passes. The one long ball he attempted also found its intended target.

The youngster continued to find the physical battle of League One difficult as he only won 50% of his ground duels and 40% of his aerial battles.

He was also poor in possession, losing the ball 7 times in the second half.

Hugill did contribute defensively however, blocking one shot and making two tackles.

The former Sunderland academy player will now take a well-earned holiday and return to Carrington to be assessed by the United staff in pre-season.

A return to under 21 football is hardly likely to be the best solution and he is clearly not ready to contribute to the first team, so another loan to League One or League Two may be the best option.

The youngster has certainly struggled but the experience of senior football in England’s third tier will definitely stand him in good stead for the future.

Perhaps, finding a loan club with a team that is better on the ball and not struggling for their lives will aid the striker’s development in the long term.

Joe Hugill’s individual struggles continued as he failed to make any real impact in his side’s crucial win versus Reading.

Burton Albion took a giant step towards safety with a crucial 3-2 win at the Pirelli stadium versus Reading.

The Brewers are now five points clear of the relegation zone, with their closest rivals Cheltenham Town only having two games left.

Burton had 10 shots on goal and regularly worked the Reading keeper by getting seven on target. They only managed to keep 32% of the ball but were able to carry a strong threat on the counter.

Hugill however was once again a peripheral figure in the match and his poor form has become a worrying trend.

The 2022 Youth Cup winner is highly rated at Carrington but the cold truth is that he has only managed one goal in 19 matches for the League One side.

His performances have seen him drop down to the bench and he was brought on for the final 26 minutes of the match.

The 20-year-old was given a score of 6.7 on Sofascore but failed to take any shots during the whole time he was on the pitch.

What’s more, he was only able to make two successful passes from an attempted four. He also lost both of his aerial duels.

The young striker lost possession four times and committed two fouls.

To be fair, Burton were holding on for a crucial win, so were hardly knocking down the door in search of goals, which probably contributed to Hugill’s incredibly weak attacking statistics.

He did contribute defensively, making one clearance and two successful tackles, as his side held on for a crucial victory.

While Hugill has massively failed to contribute goals, he has at least racked up a significant amount of minutes and a loan in a professional league where there is so much at stake, will certainly stand him in good stead for the future.

While it is certainly far too early to write Hugill off at just 20 years old, he will hope that he can use his experience this season to make more impact for his next loan club.

He will aim to sign off in style when Burton travel to Fleetwood next Saturday, where they will hope results have already gone their way and they can enjoy a rare pressure-free afternoon.

Manchester United’s academy striker Joe Hugill played 90 minutes including added time as Burton Albion were beaten by League One rivals Cheltenham.

Burton took the lead just before the break when substitute Steve Seddon gave his side the lead.

However, Cheltenham came out guns blazing after the interval and didn’t take long to restore parity as they found the back of the net just six minutes after half-time through Matt Taylor.

Cheltenham would go on to take the lad 20 minutes later courtesy of defender Curtis Davies. As it turned out, his finish was enough for Darrell Clarke’s men to secure the victory at the Pirelli Stadium.

It was a significant blow for Hugill and Burton who proved incapable of building on their previous win against 10-man Stevenage.

From a United fan’s perspective, the worrying this is that once again, Hugill struggled to make an impact in the match.

The 20-year-old still has the one goal to his name, which he scored on his debut for the League One outfit.

Against Cheltenham, Hugill registered two shots, both of which failed to hit their mark and didn’t at all trouble Luke Southwood between the sticks.

He embarked on one dribble, which he didn’t complete.

Hugill had 33 touches of the ball during the time he was on the pitch. Another thing he struggled with was his passing. The forward attempted to find his teammates with 18 passes, but only managed to deliver five, managing a pass completion rate of 28%.

The young United player attempted two crosses and launched two long balls, successfully connecting with his target on one cross but missing on both long attempts.

Defensively, Hugill also faced challenges. He engaged in three ground duels but didn’t win any and was involved in twenty aerial challenges, managing to outperform the Cheltenham players only four times.

He turned over the ball 22 times and committed two fouls.

The Englishman also failed to make a tackle, clearance or interception.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Hugill will be hoping for better fortunes when Burton host Reading this weekend.

Joe Hugill and Burton Albion secured a crucial, rare win away to Stevenage yesterday that took them three points above the relegation zone.

The Brewers were totally dominated by their hosts but still found a way to come away with the massive victory.

Burton had only 24% of the ball and seven shots to the home side’s 13.

The away side took the lead in first half stoppage time but received an extra bit of the luck when Stevenage were reduced to ten men just after the hour mark.

They doubled their lead on 76 minutes through Tom Hamer before the side from The Lamex Stadium pulled back a consolation just before full time.

After an insipid performance last weekend, Hugill found himself on the bench for this encounter.

However, he was brought on at half time and played the full second half.

Despite playing most of his match against ten men, the United loanee still struggled massively to have any influence in the game.

Sofascore gave him a rating of 6.2 in one of his poorer performances in the campaign.

The 20 year old had zero shots on or off target and he was unsuccessful in his two dribble attempts.

Hugill rarely got involved in the play as he only had 21 touches of the ball and was only capable of making three successful passes out of his eleven attempts.

He, like his team, struggled to keep hold of the ball, giving it away 12 times in 45 minutes of action.

The youngster was also irrelevant in the air as he incredibly lost all 11 of his aerial duels despite his 1.88m height.

Hugill was also only able to win two out of his eight ground duels and complete one successful tackle.

Next up for the youngster and Burton is a titanic home clash versus Cheltenham, who are two places and five points below the side from the Pirelli Stadium. A win would go a long way to securing League One football for the coming season.

From Hugill’s perspective, after two absolutely lifeless performances on the bounce, he will consider himself lucky to have any involvement at all, as he still awaits his second goal for the club, since scoring on his debut back in January.

Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill put in an absolutely dire performance as his Burton Albion side were soundly beaten 0-4 at the Pirelli Stadium by promotion-chasing Oxford United.

The 20 year old had seen an upturn in form recently, enjoying a successful Easter period.

He grabbed an assist against Wigan and hit the crossbar against Barnsley, achieving a score on Sofascore of over 7 on both occasions.

However, the stark reality is the striker has not scored since his debut against Derby on the 15th January and will be bitterly disappointed with his overall impact so far with the Brewers.

Burton were always second best in this encounter as they conceded three goals in 12 frantic second half minutes.

The U’s had 18 shots to Burton’s nine and dominated the ball with 56% possession.

Hugill himself had his worst game in a Burton shirt according to Sofascore and looking at his statistics for the match, it is hard to argue otherwise.

He was given a 6.1 rating for his afternoon’s efforts and was largely invisible in the contest.

The former Sunderland striker had zero shots of any kind as he hardly troubled the Oxford defence.

Despite playing 90 minutes, he only managed 13 touches and only attempted five passes, completing a paltry two to end the game with a 40% passing accuracy.

The youngster was also irrelevant in the air despite his tall frame, losing all nine of his aerial duels and only won one of his five ground battles.

To add to his nightmare, he was caught offside twice and lost possession of the ball nine times.

It is normal for a 20 year old in his first three months of professional football to struggle to find consistency but the insipid nature of this performance will be incredibly worrisome for the Red Devils and the player.

Lately Hugill has been able to string together a decent stretch of games as a starter, with this match being the seventh straight game he has started in.

However, after this performance, he will consider himself incredibly fortunate should he get the chance to begin the match away to Stevenage next Saturday.

The result sees Burton fall to 21st position and into the drop zone with only four matches remaining to secure their status as a League One side.

Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill continued to slowly rebuild his form despite another defeat for relegation threatened Burton Albion.

The striker had come off a good showing away to Wigan on Good Friday where he grabbed a crucial assist for his side.

Burton took an unexpected lead into halftime at home to Barnsley but a catastrophic 15 minute spell in the second half saw the visitors rush into a 1-3 lead and never looked back, holding on to take all three points.

The Tykes had 14 shots to Burton’s 12 and won the midfield battle as they kept 61% of the ball.

Hugill had a decent game as he once again came agonisingly close to adding to his goal tally for the season. Hitting the Yorkshire team on the counter, the 2022 FA Youth Cup winner hit the bar with a right footed shot from outside the box, to add to his near miss on Friday.

For the second successive game, Hugill was given a score of 7.0 on Sofascore for his afternoon’s work. He had two shots off target, with one being his effort that thundered against the crossbar. The tall forward was also able to complete 100% of his dribble attempts in the game and complete one key pass in the game.

Unfortunately the 20 year old was unable to use his height so effectively in aerial duels where he was only managed to win three out of his eleven aerial duels.

The United academy player has struggled as of late to make use of his physical strengths, but experience in League One against seasoned professionals should stand him in good stead for his future development.

Probably the most disappointing element of his performance was only passing the ball 12 times and, worryingly, only finding his teammates 25% of the time. However, it must also be remembered that he is playing in a struggling team who rarely have enough of the ball to build meaningful attacks.

The former Sunderland youth product was able to contribute more effectively in a defensive manner as he won 67% of his ground duels and made two clearances. He was also able to help his side out by making one interception and a tackle.

Hugill and Burton now find themselves in a precarious position in 20th, only one place above the drop zone. However, both Port Vale and Cheltenham below them have games in hand that could see them leapfrog his beleaguered side.

He will be hoping he ends his goal drought when The Brewers welcome Oxford United to the Pirelli Stadium this Saturday.

Manchester United’s loanee, Joe Hugill, put in one of his better displays for League One Burton Albion yesterday afternoon during the traditional Good Friday football league fixtures.

The Brewers are flirting with danger as they sit 20th and only one point above the relegation zone from the third division, so every point counts in their fight for survival.

Therefore, yesterday’s credible away draw at mid-table Wigan Athletic could yet prove pivotal in their season.

The side from the Pirelli Stadium only managed to keep the ball 30% of the time but proved effective on the counter, creating 15 chances, two more than the home side.

Hugill himself was primarily involved in three major incidents in the game as he was painfully close to adding to his solitary strike to date.

A long throw caused mayhem in the Wigan box and after the ball was returned into the penalty area with a bouncing effort, the Latics’ keeper’s fumble almost presented the alert Hugill with the chance to steer the ball home. However, the goalkeeper just managed to get his hands on the ball before the United loanee could punish the mistake.

The United man also almost equalised for his side just after half time when his effort beat Sam Tickle, but frustratingly bounced back off the post.

The youngster would eventually get his rewards in the 54th minute of play when a corner resulted in a classic lower division scramble which saw Hugill pin his defender on the goal line after the ball was curled in and poked the ball into the path of John Brayford, who smashed home to give Burton a valuable point.

The assist was Hugill’s third of the campaign.

He was awarded a score of 7 on Sofascore and almost completed the whole match, playing 88 minutes of the encounter at the DW Stadium.

The 20 year old could not get any of his own shots on target but he did manage to have one shot blocked and the aforementioned effort that hit the woodwork.

Hugill will have been irritated that he could only complete eight of 13 passes but two of them were key passes, as he created two big chances in the match.

He was poor in the air however, as he only won one out of his eight aerial duels, as he was dominated by the Wigan centre backs.

The youngster will be pleased nonetheless with his afternoon’s work as he was heavily involved with most of the positive aspects of his side’s attacking threat.

Hugill will aim to finally end the wait for his second goal since scoring on his debut back in January, when his side welcome Barnsley to the Pirelli Stadium on Easter Monday.

Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill struggled to make an impact as Burton Albion were beaten by 10-man Exeter City.

Exeter took the lead after 41 minutes via midfielder Reece Cole.

Burton were handed an advantage just before the break when Exeter defender Zak Jules was given his marching orders by the referee.

Despite having the numerical upper hand in the second half, the Brewers couldn’t capitalise and make it count.

Exeter held on to seal the win and clinch all three points at St James Park.

Hugill endured yet another miserable game and was taken off after 67 minutes of action. The United loanee was replaced by Ademola Ola-Adebomi.

While on the pitch, Hugill never really got into the game and it was unsurprising that manager Martin Paterson made the personnel change.

The United loanee had only 14 touches of the ball.

He attempted just six passes and found his teammates four times, managing a pass completion rate of 67%. One was a key pass.

Hugill registered three total cracks at goal. One was off-target but two of them required Exeter’s goalkeeper, Viljami Sinisalo to swing into action and intervene.

The Carrington academy graduate missed one big chance that could have given his side an avenue back into the match.

He didn’t have a long ball or cross to his name.

The 20-year-old lost all two ground duels that he got involved in. Aerially, Hugill was required to contest five aerial challenges. He came out on top on two occasions.

The striker lost possession four times.

He made one clearance and as many interceptions.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

The Durham-born star has so far scored just one goal for Burton when he found the back of the net on his debut for the League One outfit.

He will be hoping for far better and improved fortunes when Burton face Port Vale next weekend.

Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill suffered a disappointing night on the south coast of England.

The Youth Cup winner has endured a difficult loan spell at Burton Albion but has started the last two matches and grabbed an assist at the weekend.

Unfortunately Burton have been in terrible form and despite a brave effort came out 2-1 losers at Fratton Park against Portsmouth yesterday.

It was a tough assignment as Pompey sit top of the table while Hugill’s side languish in 19th place, just five points above the relegation zone in League One.

As their league positions suggest, the leaders were the better side, enjoying 70% of the ball and having 13 shots to eight in their favour.

In truth, Hugill was unable to get involved in the game at all and was subbed off after 69 minutes. It has been a tough learning curve for the striker but then again, it is always hard to come into a struggling team and make an impact as a youngster.

Sofascore gave the player a disappointing 6.7 rating as he toiled but to little reward.

The extent of the former Sunderland’s forward’s inability to influence the game could be seen in his statistics for the match.

He could not get a shot on or off target. His only attempt in anger was blocked by the resolute Portsmouth defence.

Strikers feed off goals and after making the perfect start with a successful strikeon his debut off the bench, the player has not found the back of the net in the previous eight games, despite providing two assists.

To say the striker is desperate for a goal is an understatement.

The Durham-born forward was hardly involved in the match, with only 16 touches to his name and a poor passing accuracy of 55% with six of his 11 passes finding their intended target.

He did however have one key pass in the game which unfortunately did not end up as a goal for his side.

The giant striker was also poor in the air, only winning three out of his seven aerial duels and none of his ground battles.

To compound a miserable evening, he also lost the ball six times on a night where his side could barely keep a foothold in the match.

Hugill will be praying that the poor performance does not result in him losing his place in the starting line up as the Albion travel to Exeter City on Saturday, looking for their first win in five.

Manchester United loanee Joe Hugill impressed for Burton Albion in spite of a 1-3 home loss to Peterborough United.

The Brewers were totally dominated as the visitors enjoyed 75% of the ball but were only outmatched 12 to 14 in terms of shots.

Burton fought bravely as they equalised in the 70th minute, but the Posh’s quality shone through as they ran out winners with two late goals.

Hugill has not had much to shout about lately as he has struggled to make an impact for his new side despite a fantastic start where he grabbed a goal and an assist in his first two matches in League One.

The 20 year old was involved early on as he created a fantastic chance for his teammate, who could not take the opportunity.

The former Sunderland youth player outmuscled his opponent on the right wing and fired a lovely low ball across goal, where the Burton player fired wildly over.

Hugill was making use of his physicality again in the second half as he got a crucial assist for his team to equalise in the 70th minute.

A long ball was launched from the left hand side of the pitch and he flicked the ball on delicately for substitute Ademola Ola-Adebomi to guide home.

Sadly his side could not hold on for a meritorious point against much better opposition, but it was a pleasing and much-needed performance from the United man.

Sofascore gave the player a score of 7.2 for his 71 minutes of action.

The striker provided the assist just before he came off the pitch but was also involved in two key passes and was responsible for two big chances being created at the Pirelli Stadium.

Hugill touched the ball 19 times and completed seven out of his 11 passes, giving him an accuracy of 64%.

The young striker was poor in duels however, only winning 25% of his ground efforts and 33% in the air.

After the defeat, Burton continue to languish just one place above the relegation zone and will hope for better luck against Portsmouth tomorrow night, as the hectic pace of the lower divisions of England show no signs of letting up.

From a United perspective, Hugill will hope to start once again and be a menace to Pompey’s defence on Tuesday as he was on Saturday afternoon.
