Manchester United women have received an Easter weekend boost with two key stars set to return from injury ahead of their WSL clash against Everton.

Leah Galton had been sidelined for a few weeks through a thigh injury but manager Marc Skinner told the press that she will be available for selection.

Meanwhile, Hinata Miyazawa, who had picked up an injury whilst on international duty with Japan before Christmas, is also on her way back.

She underwent successful surgery on a fractured ankle upon her return to England.

Skinner confirmed a few weeks ago that she was back training on the grass before she was named in the Japan squad for the She Believes Cup during the week.

Ahead of the match against Everton on Easter Sunday, Skinner confirmed that the Japanese star is ready to come back into the fold.

The boss said: “Both will be available for the game this weekend, obviously won’t be 90, but they should both be up for selection and available for the squad, which is really, really positive.”

Unfortunately for United, they will be without Jayde Riviere after she picked up a knock against Manchester City last weekend.

Riviere, who had just returned from injury, seemed to slip whilst she was changing direction and seemed in a lot of pain as she was attended to by medical staff.

Skinner revealed there was no set time frame for her return as yet with the medical team continuing to assess her.

United are hoping to bounce back after last week’s 1-3 derby defeat to City which saw them drop to fifth in the league behind Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Everton sit in tenth place having fought for a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby last weekend.

Kick-off is scheduled for 12 noon on Easter Sunday at Leigh Sports Village.

Marc Skinner lays out bizarre strategy for winning women's Manchester derby on Saturday https://thepeoplesperson.com/2024/03/21/marc-skinner-confident-his-manchester-united-women-side-can-beat-manchester-city-277810/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 14:03:40 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=277810 Manchester United women manager, Marc Skinner, told press he’s in a good…

Manchester United women manager, Marc Skinner, told press he’s in a good mood ahead of the Manchester derby on Saturday.

In the reverse fixture, United lost at Old Trafford 3-1 but Skinner believes his United side can go toe-to-toe with the blue side of Manchester.

He said: “We’ve got to go to the Etihad, a very difficult place, against a very difficult team, but we’ve got to try to win the game of football.

Laying out his strategy for winning the game, Skinner focussed on atmosphere and fortune as the important ingredients.

“We’ve got to use all of the derby tension, all of those factors, but we’ve got to get to a place where we can try to win the game. Not many teams do it and that’s what we’ve got to break. We’ve done it before and that’s what we’re aiming to do again.

“You’ve got to have a bit of luck. But also we’ve got to be at the very best of our performance. If we do that, I have no doubt we can beat any team. So the reality is we’ve got to put ourselves in that elite performance on the game day. And if we do that, I’ll believe in us to be able to win the game.”

It will be the third time this season that the two sides have faced each other with City coming out on top in the previous two meetings.

At the start of the year, United travelled to the Joie stadium in the final group game of the Conti Cup and were narrowly beaten by City.

“We shouldn’t have lost the game. I thought it was a fantastic performance from us. There are loads of factors that are different to a normal game in a derby, but it’s part and parcel of what makes it exciting. I absolutely, wholeheartedly believe in my team to be able to go toe-to-toe with Manchester City.”

Gareth Taylor’s City are in good form and sit just behind Chelsea on goal difference at the top of the table so it will be a tough game for United.

Leah Galton remains out through a thigh injury and long term absentees such as Emma Watson, Jess Simpson and Gabby George are still unavailable.

Hinata Miyazawa is also still unavailable for the Reds but there was positive news regarding her recovery.

“Hini is back on the grass, which is fantastic. Hopefully, she will be back, maybe some time in the next few weeks if we can.”

For the hosts, they are without Jill Roord who ruptured her ACL in the last Manchester derby but Khadija Shaw returned from injury last weekend in City’s 4-1 victory over Brighton.

The derby kicks off at 12.30 on Saturday and is on TV on BBC One.

Three months in to their competitive careers at Manchester United and the summer signings have so far offered mixed results on the field.

Undoubtedly, the squad as a whole have had a mixed first half of the season, losing pace with the top three, crashing out of the Champions League but topping the Conti Cup group heading into the new year.

The team has also been hit with injuries with a number of our newcomers falling victim to lengthy ailments, mostly picked up in training or on international duty.

However, some of the summer stars have settled in nicely and are proving to be unstoppable on the pitch.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce

The American shot-stopper has played in all three of United’s Conti Cup group games meaning she has a 100% win record at the moment, keeping two clean sheets and conceding just one.

Tullis-Joyce created a memorable moment in United’s 1-0 win over Liverpool when she pulled off a world class save to deny them an equaliser.

Gabby George

Defender Gabby George returned to the side after previously playing for the club at youth level.

She showed promise in her opening few games for United but suffered an ACL injury against Leicester in the League, ending her season. She is recovering well from surgery.

Gemma Evans

The Welsh international brought with her a wealth of experience upon joining the club, having previously made 99 top flight appearances.

As United struggled in defence with the injury to Gabby George, Evans has risen to the challenge and settled in quickly to United’s back line.

Irene Guerrero

Guerrero is another of United’s newcomers to have been plagued with injuries.

However, she deserves praise for her appearances off the pitch as well, throwing herself in to her work with the MU Foundation, which is an important part of the ethos of the club. Sources close to the club have praised the Spanish international, who is said to have thoroughly enjoyed her time working with and meeting some of the children that the foundation benefits.

Hinata Miyazawa

Miyazawa came to United a World Cup Golden Boot winner and though we saw glimpses of her potential as a world class midfielder, she took time to settle in to this team.

She got her first goal for the club shortly before the last international break of the year and looked to have found her form. However, whilst playing in a friendly for Japan she suffered an ankle injury which required surgery.

Emma Watson

Before the season even began, the gifted youngster Emma Watson suffered an ACL injury whilst playing for Scotland.

Melvine Malard

Malard is only on loan, but the club will most definitely be trying to get her to make the move permanent.

She is proving to be United’s best signing so far, scoring the club’s first ever Champions League goal and being United’s top scorer so far this season.

She is really enjoying her time in England, becoming a fan favourite and singing the praises of captain Katie Zelem, who has made her feel at home despite the language barrier.

Geyse

The Brazilian international is one of the most technically gifted footballers to ever play in the women’s game, the way she dances round defenders and finds a way through, it’s like her feet are magic, it’s mesmerizing to watch.

However, after she’s accomplished the hard part, her decisions in front of goal and her finishing need a little work.

She has settled well though and fans can expect big performances from her in the second half of the season.

Manchester United Women travel to Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow for the last away game of the year.

Before many of United’s stars left to play for their respective international sides they beat Bristol City 2-0 in the league and currently sit fourth.

Unfortunately, United’s injury list has grown further during the international break.

Joining Emma Watson, Gabby George, Jessica Simpson, and Aoife Mannion is Evie Rabjohn, who revealed she had a stress fracture in her foot earlier this week.

Hinata Miyazawa came on for Japan in their friendly with Brazil but went off injured just minutes later.

Marc Skinner revealed yesterday that the World Cup top goalscorer would be out until after Christmas.

However, Irene Guerrero could get some minutes in after recovering from an MCL and calf injury.

Hosts Tottenham will be without Grace Clinton, who is on loan from United and therefore is ineligible to play against her home club.

They are also expected to be without Olga Ahtinen, who is also suffering with an MCL injury.

Meanwhile, Bethany England is expected to return after three months on the sidelines whilst ex-United star Martha Thomas is likely to play against her old club.

Before the international break Spurs were beaten 7-0 by Manchester City, so they will be eager to bounce back. They are winless since 21 October, when they beat Aston Villa 4-2.

Kick off in London is at 18.45 and the match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports.

With the International break over, players are starting to arrive back at Carrington for training ahead of United’s clash with Tottenham at the weekend.

14 United stars took part for their countries over the last week with mixed results.

Hinata Miyazawa took part in two international friendlies against Geyse’s Brazil but there was personal heartbreak for her as she picked up what looked to be a nasty injury.

Meanwhile, Jayde Riviere was part of Canada’s squad who hosted two international friendlies against Australia, with Canada winning both matches.

Wales have had a miserable time in the Nations League and they begun these fixtures with another loss.

Hayley Ladd, Gemma Evans and Safia Middleton-Patel were called up by Gemma Grainger but they found themselves relegated as they were thrashed by Iceland.

There was some hope for the future though as they held group winners Germany to a goalless draw to end their campaign on a positive note.

France and Spain both progressed to the semi-finals of the Nations League and Melvine Malard and Lucia Garcia were in action.

Malard assisted the winning goal as France beat Portugal to secure their progression.

But despite two very entertaining wins for England’s Lionesses, they did not do enough to progress to the semi-finals and their Olympic dreams are now over.

They faced Netherlands in a must win game but fell behind in the first half 2-0, the second goal was a rare mistake from United keeper, Mary Earps.

The European champions managed to turn it around in the second half with United’s Ella Toone getting the winning goal to make it 3-2 to England but they really needed one more goal to go ahead of the Netherlands in the table.

Earps was inconsolable on the pitch as she felt her error had cost the team dearly but they still had a fighting chance of getting to the Olympics.

On the final day they needed to beat Scotland by three more goals than what Netherlands scored against Belgium – it felt impossible.

However, at half-time, England were on top of the group as Netherlands were winning 1-0 and England were winning 4-0 thanks to two former Reds – Greenwood and James as well as the returning Beth Mead.

Both teams were receiving news from the touchline on how the other was doing but Scotland had parked the bus.

England scored a fifth through Fran Kirby, giving England a cushion, but not long after, Netherlands netted a second.

As injury time began, Netherlands scored a third against Belgium and as England boss Sarina Wiegman updated her players, Toone assisted Lucy Bronze, who headed in for the final action of the match.

The team waited anxiously for news that the other game was over but with Netherlands a minute or so behind, Sarina’s home nation must have received word that they needed one more and somehow they got it, breaking English hearts as the final score was 4-0, meaning England’s 6-0 victory was not enough.

It was a dramatic end to the Nations League, showcasing the highs and lows of football.

Now, attention switches back to the domestic league as United quickly regroup for a trip to London to take on Spurs.

Manchester United Women are anxiously waiting for an update on Hinata Miyazawa after she was reportedly injured in Japan’s friendly against Brazil.

Miyazawa came on for Japan as a substitute in their game against the South American nation but went off injured just a few minutes later.

Videos posted to social media show the World Cup Golden Boot winner limping off with two members of the medical team helping her to walk.

It comes after the midfielder scored her first goal for the club against Bristol City in the last weekend before the international break.

United have a series of players ruled out through injury with Gabby George and Emma Watson sidelined long term with ACL injuries.

Irene Guerrero is expected back soon after suffering an MCL while Evie Rabjohn is due back after Christmas with Aoife Mannion also set to return.

United haven’t announced any official updates on Miyazawa and will likely have to wait until the conclusion of the international break before they can assess the situation.

There are two more days until the whole squad returns from their respective countries’ camps and Marc Skinner will face a tight turn around to prepare his side for their away fixture at Tottenham on Sunday.

England take on Scotland today in their final Nations League match.

Six Reds, including Ella Toone and Mary Earps, could be involved as they look to beat Scotland by some margin to keep their Olympic dreams alive.

Elsewhere, Lucia Garcia is expected to be involved for Spain while Hayley Ladd, Safia Middleton-Patel and Gemma Evans could be involved for Wales.

Manchester United Women have 14 players who have been called up on international duty this week.

Six of those players could be in action for England’s Lionesses as they take on the Netherlands tomorrow night, followed by Scotland next Tuesday in the Nations League.

Mary Earps has been called up as she continues to be Sarina Wiegman’s first choice keeper after she scooped another individual award in the week.

The BBC crowned the shot-stopper as Women’s Footballer of the Year, the first time a keeper has won the award.

Earps is joined by England regular Ella Toone and United Captain Katie Zelem.

Also in the squad is defenders Maya Le Tissier and Millie Turner, the latter replacing Chelsea’s Millie Bright, who withdrew through injury.

Grace Clinton, who is currently on loan to Tottenham, also comes into the side.

England must win both games and hope other games go their way if they have any chance of topping the group and qualifying for the Olympics.

Meanwhile, three United stars have been called up for Wales, goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel, defender Gemma Evans and midfielder Hayley Ladd.

They take on Iceland tomorrow night as they battle the threat of relegation.

Lucia Garcia could be in action for Spain who currently sit top of group C while Lisa Naalsund has been called up for Norway.

Geyse and Hinata Miyazawa came face to face tonight as Brazil hosted Japan in an international friendly and it was Geyse’s side who came out on top in a goal fest that ended 4-3.

Canada take on Australia in the early hours of Saturday morning and Jayde Riviere is expected to play for the hosts.

United’s next game is on December 10th when they will travel to Tottenham in the league.

Manchester United Women have beaten bottom of the league Bristol City 2-0 as they got back to winning ways in the league.

It was a fight for Bristol from the start as Leah Galton and Geyse ran rings round the Robins defence.

Aspin chopped down Galton in the second minute but came off worse in the challenge and United couldn’t capitalise on the free kick.

Five minutes later, Geyse wriggled free of her defender and cut it back to Parris whose strike was well saved by Clark in the Bristol goal.

Again United came, Galton and Turner both denied by the gloves of Clark as she saved her team from falling behind in the first half.

Aspin succumbed to the earlier knock she had picked up and had to be stretchered off in the 26th minute.

The stoppage disrupted United’s rhythm and for a short time Bristol saw more possession.

Just before half-time Bristol had their best chance of the game but Earps got down low to stop a header from sneaking into the bottom corner.

United made the breakthrough in the second half as 50 minutes in Hinata Miyazawa bagged her first goal for the club. Her deflected strike from outside of the area wrong footed the keeper to break the deadlock.

Five minutes later and United doubled their lead as Ella Toone delivered a beautiful cross which Parris rose to head past Clark.

Toone had two assists now but wanted a goal herself, she found the net in the 63rd minute but it was ruled out for offside despite it coming off a Bristol defender last.

Two minutes later and she squared a ball to the onrushing Parris who slid and tapped it home but momentum kept pulling her forward and she collided nastily with the goal post.

Again the linesman’s flag was up but it was a tight call, it would be Parris’ last involvement of the game as she went off to receive treatment.

It was a dominant display from United who probably could’ve boasted a bigger scoreline if not for Clark’s heroics between the sticks.

Team: Earps, Le Tissier, Turner, Blundell, Riviere, Zelem, Miyazawa (Ladd 67), Parris (Malard 67), Toone, Galton (Williams 77), Geyse (Garcia 78)

Two Manchester United Women’s players were in contention for the Ballon d’Or, goalkeeper Mary Earps and new signing and golden boot winner, Hinata Miyazawa.

Tonight, in a ceremony hosted in Paris, they learnt their positions in the race for the coveted trophy.

Earps, who helped England lift the European trophy last year and took them to the final of the World Cup, this year came fifth.

She has had a stellar couple of years after fighting her way back into the England side under Sarina Wiegman, lifting the trophy at the Euros and the Women’s Finalissima and saving a penalty in the World Cup final.

Domestically, she helped secure a place in Europe for United after they finished second in the league as Earps picked up the WSL’s Golden Glove award for most clean sheets.

She also is the current holder of the Women’s FIFA Best Goalkeeper Award.

Meanwhile, new signing Hinata Miyazawa, who won the Golden Boot at this year’s Women’s World Cup, came in 12th place.

The winner was Spain and Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati, who is having a fantastic year after winning the World Cup with her country this summer.

Chelsea and Australian star Sam Kerr came second while Barcelona duo, Salma Paralluelo and Fridolina Rolfo, finished third and fourth respectively.

Earps’ Lionesses teammate Rachel Daly came 10th.

However, England’s Georgia Stanway and Millie Bright, and the Republic of Ireland’s Katie McCabe all missed out on the top 10.

Earps is currently in Belgium with the England Lionesses preparing for their match tomorrow night in the Nations League.

There are 13 Manchester United Women stars on international duty this week as the Nations League continues.

In action for the England Lionesses, who face Belgium tonight, is shot-stopper Mary Earps, who was instrumental in the Reds 5-0 thrashing of Everton last weekend.

Ella Toone, one of the most popular players amongst England and United fans, has also been called up for England’s crucial matches against Belgium.

Captain Katie Zelem and Maya Le Tissier are also in the squad alongside Grace Clinton, who is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur.

England face Belgium at home tonight before travelling to face them away next Tuesday.

They need a good win tonight as they currently sit in third in their group behind tonight’s opponents and the Netherlands, who beat them last time out.

A place in the Olympics next year is riding on progression out of the group.

Meanwhile, three United women have been called up for Wales, their young goalkeeper, Safia Middleton-Patel, midfield maestro Hayley Ladd and defender Gemma Evans.

Wales are in action against European runners up, Germany, tonight.

They are currently bottom of their group with no points on the board so far.

One of United’s star signings this summer, Geyse, has been called up for Brazil, who take on Canada tomorrow.

She will come up against her United teammate Jayde Riviere, who will play in defence for Canada.

Lucia Garcia will meet up with former teammate Ona Batlle as Spain take on Italy this evening in their Nations League clash.

The World Champions are currently top of their group having played two and won two.

Meanwhile, Norway take on France in group A2 and Lisa Naalsund will be a part of their squad.

They have drawn one and lost one so far with tonight’s opponents leading that group.

Hinata Miyazawa has been called up for training with Japan after a bright start to her season in the WSL.
