They’re queueing up to sign Donny van de Beek, but his agent won’t be impressed by who’s in that queue.

Manchester United signed the Dutchman for €39 million from Ajax in September 2020 and it looked at the time to be a superb signing. Van de Beek was one of the most coveted midfielders in world football at the time.

However, things did not work out as expected. Immersed in the chaos of Manchester United’s mismanagement, a series of endless injuries, unsuccessful loan deals and erratic form, the now 27 year old’s career has faltered and ground to a halt as we gallop towards the fourth anniversary of the day he signed.

His latest loan deal at Eintracht Frankfurt has been another disaster. He has only made eight appearances all season, with two starts, and the German club has long since decided not to exercise the option to buy that was included in the deal.

Propped up by the sentimentality of fond memories of his former glory days in Amsterdam, Ajax recently boldly nailed their colours to the mast and offered to kill the fatted calf for their prodigal son.

However, Van de Beek’s agent, Guido Albers, turned down the move, stating that “my preference was to look in Spain, France or Italy”.

Albers, therefore, will presumably similarly be turning down the latest club to throw their hat into the ring by virtue of their geography.

According to fichajes.net, Galatasaray “see in the Dutch midfielder an attractive option to strengthen its midfield and increase its competitiveness in the different competitions in which it participates.”

The report explains that Gala “hope to convince Van de Beek by offering him the opportunity to have a more constant participation and a relevant role in the team.”

There is plenty of time to sort out a new club for Donny before the new season starts, but it may be that Albers is not serving his client well by holding out for a starting number 10 role in one of Europe’s top leagues after the four years the player has had.

There have been murmurs of Real Sociedad and Inter Milan showing some interest, but nothing concrete has developed at this stage. A loan to Sociedad fell through previously and there may be big boots to fill there if Martin Zubimendi moves on. Meanwhile, opportunities could be limited in a successful and established Inter side which tends to operate with twin strikers rather than a number 10.

Of course, the option remains for Van de Beek to sit out the last year of his Old Trafford contract if nothing emerges to please him. However, that would almost certainly mean his spell in the wilderness will extend to five years and his stock could be so low that ships such as Ajax and Galatasaray might have sailed, too.

The post Nine questions that Erik ten Hag should be asked at press conferences appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

]]>

At his pre-match press conference before yesterday’s defeat to Arsenal, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was asked his opinion on people asking for him to be sacked, and replied:

“Either they don’t have any knowledge of football or they don’t have any knowledge about managing a football team.”

Ten Hag also said “maybe we over-performed” last season and has consistently blamed United’s poor showing in the league and Champions League on all the injuries sustained this season.

What seems odd about recent press conferences is the questions that are not being asked, although the club’s decision to ban three major outlets from asking anything could be an indication that stiff challenges are not allowed.

So we will ask the questions that no-one is asking Ten Hag. Perhaps whoever is reading this who knows Erik could pass them on. After all, we want to understand football like he does.

Question 1. Is it just bad luck that United have sustained so many injuries this season? Are you taking no responsibility at all for:
– training methods
– recovery schedules
– team rotation?

We are dealing here with a man who is reportedly so meticulous, you demand the grass on training pitches is cut to within a millimetre of your specifications. You are a man who completely controls the players’ diets, a man who, unlike Sir Alex Ferguson, oversees every detail of training.

Several weeks ago when asked if you knew why there had been so many injuries, you replied “We have an idea and we will work on it.” And yet since then, things have got even worse. So will you accept responsibility, Erik, for the failure of that “work” you were doing?

You either take no responsibility for the injury crisis, in which case you have failed to take control of something vitally important, or you do take responsibility, in which case you have failed to fix it. Either way, what are we who “don’t have any knowledge of football” not understanding when we call for you to be sacked?

Question 2. On squad construction. Ignoring the injuries:
– did you not spend £10 million on loaning Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina and do you take responsibility for his being an absolute flop at United?
– did you not sanction the sale of Teden Mengi to Luton Town for under £2 million on August 31st, who has turned out to be one of the Premier League’s best young defenders this season, knowing that your centre backs are all injury prone?
– did you not sanction the sale of Dean Henderson to Crystal Palace, knowing that Andre Onana might take some time to acclimatise to the Premier League, and putting the team in a position where it had to get used to not one, but two new keepers?
– did you not agree for Alvaro Fernandez Carreras to go on loan to Granada in August when Luke Shaw’s understudy, Tyrell Malacia, was clearly going to be out for some time, and then again to Benfica in January, when Shaw himself was also injured?
– did you also not return loanee left back Sergio Reguilon to Spurs in January leaving no cover at left back at all with Shaw struggling with persistent injuries?
– did you not fail to bring the best out of Jadon Sancho and then mishandle a disciplinary situation, leaving him to excel at Borussia Dortmund and help them to the Champions League final while you plodded on with a far inferior player in Antony?
– did you not forfeit the option to make Marcel Sabitzer’s move from Dortmund permanent last summer and live to regret it when seeing him, also, look a far better midfielder than any you retained or bought?
– would you not admit that a player you sold for £15 million, Anthony Elanga, has outperformed all your wingers this season despite playing for a relegation-threatened side?

Question 3. Do you accept any responsibility for United crashing out of the Champions League from one of the easiest groups in the tournament?

Question 4. Do you not accept that even an injury-ravaged Manchester United side should not:
– Concede four goals to FC Copenhagen and Crystal Palace?
– Concede three goals to Bournemouth, Coventry City, Galatasaray (twice), Brighton, Newcastle and Wolves?
– Concede two goals to Newport County?

Question 5. Do you take any responsibility for team discipline when in addition to Sancho, there have been off-field issues or public spats with Antony, Marcus Rashford, Raphael Varane, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo?

Question 6. Would you not admit to being stubborn in not admitting that the “transitional style” of play you chose to implement this season has been an abject failure? Should it not have been abandoned long ago?

Question 7. Is that gaping space between the midfield line and defensive line that has left us vulnerable to hundreds of counter-attacks this season a good thing? We are asking because you continue to leave it unaddressed so you must have a good reason that we, those who don’t understand football, would like to learn about.

Question 8. Could you explain please the logic of leaving one defender back for a corner when there are two minutes of extra time remaining and United are a goal up? It is obviously something very clever of you that is beyond our comprehension.

Question 9. Most goals conceded since 1971 (when there were four more games in the season) and on target to be the most ever. Joint most home defeats in history (a loss on Wednesday will take us to outright worst) – again, even comparing to years when there were 42 games per season. Many other negative records broken. This is despite £175 million having been spent on transfers. Since you have always been able to field 11 senior players in every game this season, would you not agree that this alone is grounds for dismissal?

Erik, we look forward to understanding these things so we can become better fans, pundits and journalists and provide you with the correct support you so richly deserve.

Manchester United lost 0-1 to Arsenal at Old Trafford this afternoon. Here are our player ratings from the game:

(A score of 6 is around average)

Andre Onana 5- Distribution, the main thing he was bought for, was lacking again. Actually didn’t have much to do until a save from Martinelli in the 79th minute.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 3- Left acres of space on Arsenal’s left flank time and again. Really needs to be sold this summer.

Casemiro 2- Appalling for Trossard goal. Of course, he’s not a natural centre back, but does that excuse the complete lack of awareness and effort?

Jonny Evans 5- Didn’t do too much wrong but hardly imperious.

Diogo Dalot 7- United’s best defender. Didn’t set the world on fire but was the only one that looked Premier League standard.

Kobbie Mainoo 7- Nothing fancy but was steady. Would like to see him take games more by the scruff of the neck. Can hold his head up.

Sofyan Amrabat 3.5- Made some mistakes and really offered very little to the side. A nice long pass early in second half. Gave the ball away a few times but at least he tried to get it back.

Amad 7- Without doing anything earth shattering, Amad was one of United’s best players. Great ball control and technique and drew a few fouls, even though Paul Tierney decided to ignore them. Arguably should have had an assist for the first-half penalty that wasn’t given. Went off the boil in the second half.

Scott McTominay 1- League two standard. Really shocking midfield performance from United’s captain for a day. Johnny-off-the-spot. How was he not subbed? Total passenger.

Alejandro Garnacho 3- Tried some of his runs and dribbles but his decision making really needs to improve. The end product was seriously lacking. Last ball terrible.

Rasmus Hojlund 3- Looks devoid of confidence and ideas. It would be easy to judge him on this sort of performance, but he needs better coaching and a better side around him before we can really judge whether he’s got what it takes.

Substitutes:

Antony 5- Did nothing to change the course of the game.

Willy Kambwala 6- Looked steady.

Christian Eriksen 6- No time to make much impact.

Omari Forson 6- No time to make much impact.

Ethan Wheatley 6- No time to make impact.

Manager Erik ten Hag 3– Tactics contained Arsenal quite well but the lack of any ball-playing midfielders seriously limited United’s attacking threat. Subs could have been made sooner.

Hopes that Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford would be back in the Manchester United squad to face Arsenal this afternoon have been dashed as the Red Devils prepare to plough on without them.

Manager Erik ten Hag had stated that Rashford, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes would all return after injury, but that has proven not to be the case for the England and Portuguese stars.

There is a rare start for both Sofyan Amrabat and Amad Diallo as Ten Hag picks through the bare bones of his threadbare squad.

Andre Onana is in goal.

The back four remains unchanged, with Diogo Dalot, Casemiro, Jonny Evans and Aaron Wan-Bissaka hoping to improve on the 4-0 disaster against Crystal Palace on Monday.

Ahead of them, Amrabat joins Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

With Mason Mount out injured, it looks like Scott McTominay will play in the number 10 position, with Amad and Alejandro Garnacho on the wings and Rasmus Hojlund expected to play up front.

Lisandro Martinez is back in training but Ten Hag said it was too soon for him to return. Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are all still unavailable.

Anthony Martial is also still not ready to make his comeback after injury.

Will Kambwala is back on the bench after recovering from injury. He is joined by Antony and Christian Eriksen, who are dropped after Monday’s debacle, Altay Bayindir, Habeeb Ogunneye, Harry Amass, Toby Collyer, Omari Forson and Ethan Wheatley.

Kick off at Old Trafford is at 4.30pm.

Erik ten Hag insists he has had no second thoughts about taking the Manchester United’s manager’s job as his team prepares for tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

“I don’t regret being here for one second,” he said at the pre-match press conference.

“This is a massive club. You don’t know the challenges you have to face until you are in it. But I wanted this challenge and have not had one second when I regret that decision. I am really happy to be here.”

Speaking of the progress this season, he said:

“In the first year I would say it was a good formation. We played to our levels, maybe we over-performed.

“In this one we haven’t and I know why, but we are still in an FA Cup final and that is a great achievement.”

Asked his opinion about those calling for him to be sacked, the manager said:

“I see some comments, either they don’t have any knowledge of football or they don’t have any knowledge about managing a football team.

“I think there are many people who see the problems and they are patient.”

The boss was also asked about team cohesion after Monday night’s shocking 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

“If I look at the problems we have faced and all the injuries we have had, in almost every game the players have still fought. There has been great team spirit,” he replied.

“But not on Monday night – and that is why I was disappointed.

“I was really disappointed and the players were disappointed with themselves. There was a collective failure. But in all the other games, we have fought for each other, showed good team spirit – and I don’t have any doubt about this.

“The players fight and there is a good team spirit. I think the fans have seen this. They saw against Brentford how we fought. We did not play well but we fought and stayed in the game.

“At Chelsea, it was a great game, we played very good and we fought. Against Liverpool, we had to adapt the backline because Raphael [Varane] and Jonny [Evans] dropped out, but we fought and got a very good result.”

United’s match against Arsenal kicks off at Old Trafford tomorrow at 4.30pm.

Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford have all recovered from injury and are in line to return to the Manchester United squad for tomorrow’s Premier League tie against Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount, who replaced Fernandes in Monday’s ill-fated outing against Crystal Palace, has picked up another injury and will miss the game.

Fernandes coming straight back in the side for Mount therefore seems an inevitability.

As for McTominay and Rashford, their position in the starting XI is more contentious.

Christian Eriksen has been playing alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the twin midfield pivot, with Sofyan Amrabat the only other option. The Moroccan has not looked impressive when he has played.

The other alternative in midfield is to move Casemiro back and find another option at centre back, where he looked completely out of his depth at Selhurst Park on Monday, leading former United captain Roy Keane to insist he should not be allowed to continue in the role.

But with none of the injured defenders close to a return yet, there seems little alternative to keeping the Brazilian there, unless McTominay himself takes the position, as he has done for Scotland on a few occasions.

But we think Casemiro will stay at centre back and that McTominay will replace Eriksen in midfield. Manager Erik ten Hag can perhaps just hope that where Casemiro is concerned, practice makes perfect.

The rest of the defence should stay the same, with Andre Onana in goal, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka the full-backs and Jonny Evans at left centre back.

Lisandro Martinez is back in training and Ten Hag said he asked him to play, but he has been told it is too soon. Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Willy Kambwala, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia also all remain unavailable.

Shaw has suffered a small setback on his own road to recovery.

Up front, Rashford could be brought straight back into the side and frankly, only Alejandro Garnacho looks untouchable there. Antony and Rasmus Hojlund were both poor again against Palace, although the Brazilian is more willing to track back and help out his defence than Rashford, which might persuade the boss to keep him in the side against the high-flying Gunners.

What Ten Hag might do is to drop the exhausted-looking Hojlund and play Rashford up front, leaving Antony on the right wing.

Amad is another option but never seems favoured by the manager. Anthony Martial is also back in training but is unlikely to feature, except perhaps from the bench.

With all that in mind, here is our predicted XI for tomorrow’s game:

Erik ten Hag finally has some good news ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League tie against Arsenal on Sunday.

Ten Hag was asked for an injury update during the pre-match press conference and said that Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford are back in training and could play against Arsenal on Sunday.

He said: “Bruno was on the pitch and Scott McTominay was on the pitch, so there are some players returning.

“Rashy, of course, he trained this morning as well, and we have to see how he recovered from this. But I think it looks quite good and I hope he can tomorrow make the next training and then see if he is available for Sunday.”

Mason Mount has picked up another injury and won’t play. He also said he still hopes that Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw could return for the FA Cup final.

Asked about Mount, he said: “It’s not that I am not happy with Mason. He is also a very robust player, you see in his profile. In the last four seasons before this, he only had a small issue in the end of his Chelsea career. He’s had very bad luck and he’s a really good player. We’ve really missed him this season.”

The manager also said “Luke Shaw had a setback in his process as well but there is still a hope and he will fight to be available for the final.”

Martinez asked to play against Arsenal but it was judged to be too soon.

“Yesterday, Licha came to me and wanted to play on Sunday against Arsenal but he’s not ready yet, he needs a little bit more time to go through the process.

“He is desperate to play. The team has missed him. He wants to play but has had three injuries across the season. He’s injury free now and has to get back into the team.”

There was also a question about whether he felt he should get a vote of confidence from the owners, given the pressure he is under.

“You have to ask this question to the owners not to me,” he said. “It’s my job and I take responsibility to speak to you. I don’t care if they do or don’t, I keep working to improve my team.”

Asked whether he was concerned for his job after fellow Dutchman Louis van Gaal was sacked by United after winning the FA Cup, he said:

“No, I think they have common sense. They have seen you have 32 different backlines, when you lose eight CB’s, when we see we don’t have a left back, they know that will have a negative impact.”

Speaking about the travelling fans’ reaction after the 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace, Ten Hag remarked:

“They were our example on Monday. They backed us. They see how we struggle. They see the problems we have and have a good understanding about the injuries we have, but they keep backing the team. I’m very happy with them.”

“We are still fighting, and it’s a huge FA Cup final. We are still there. It can be a highlight of the season, but we know why we are under-performing. I am a realistic person, I see this, I analyse, and no team will perform with these injuries.”

The post Getafe president Angel Torres confirms FC Barcelona want to buy Mason Greenwood appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

Getafe president Angel Torres claims FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has asked him about the future of Manchester United loanee, Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood’s season-long loan at Getafe came after a lengthy suspension due to criminal charges having been laid against him, charges that were subsequently dropped.

Despite a slow start to the loan spell after many months without football, Greenwood hit his stride and has become a potent force in La Liga, scoring 10 goals and providing 6 assists in 32 games.

Greenwood’s returning to United at the end of the season is a political hot potato for new part-owners INEOS, with many fans, staff and players uncomfortable about giving him a second chance after the alleged rape and assault of his girlfriend.

This has alerted many clubs to the possibility of a cut-price deal for the 22 year old, with United reportedly looking at a figure of around £30 million for the former Golden Boy nominee.

Getafe themselves have openly campaigned to keep Greenwood on loan another year, but with United preferring a sale, president Torres has admitted it is complicated.

“If it depends on the parents and the club, I think he will continue for another year,” he said to Radio Marca via fichajes.com.

“Manchester’s idea is to sell if there is a good offer, so we will have to wait. I think he will stay.”

Moreover, asked to confirm if there was any truth in Atletico Madrid’s interest in the England man, Torres revealed interest from elsewhere.

“No one from Atleti has asked me about Greenwood,” he said. “I spoke with Miguel Ángel (Gil), but about other things.

“The only one who asked me about the player in that sense was Joan Laporta [president of FC Barcelona], but first you have to sell to sign, that’s the problem of Spanish football.”

Barcelona’s financial problems are, of course, legend in football circles and they would seem unlikely even to be able to raise £30 million. However, with United reportedly coveting some of their own stars, including Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, it is not unfeasible that some sort of player exchange could be worked out.

Bruno Fernandes will miss the first game of his senior career through injury as Manchester United face Crystal Palace tonight.

Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay also failed to make the squad despite hopes that they may have recovered from injury in time.

Harry Maguire was injured in traning yesterday and also misses out. He will be out for three weeks and is doubtful for the FA Cup final.

The only good news is that Jonny Evans has recovered from injury and can play.

Andre Onana will be in goal.

The back four will be Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Evans and Casemiro.

Kobbie Mainoo and Christian Eriksen will be the holding midfielders.

Mason Mount will take Fernandes’ place and start his first game since November in the number 10 position.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony are the wide men, with Rasmus Hojlund up front.

Other than Sofyan Amrabat and Tom Heaton, those are the only senior players available as this season’s injury curse ploughs new depths.

Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, and Anthony Martial also all remain sidelined, although the last three have all resumed training.

Joining Amrabat and Heaton on the bench are Altay Bayindir, Harry Amass, Amad, Ethan Wheatley, Louis Jackson, Habeeb Ogunneye and Toby Collyer.

United desperately need three points tonight as even their hopes of Europa League football are starting to fade due to late runs of good form from Newcastle and Chelsea.

Kick off at Selhurst Park is at 8pm.

Bayern Munich have opened unofficial talks with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag over becoming their next manager.

On Saturday it was reported that Ten Hag is on a new shortlist for the Bayern job after former United boss Ralf Rangnick was the latest to turn the Bavarian side down.

It was then reported yesterday by Sky Germany that the Dutchman wants to stay at United but would jump at the chance of the Bavarian job should things change in Manchester.

This morning, Sky Sports News have added meat to the bones of that story, claiming that the German club has been speaking to Ten Hag’s agent, Kees Vos.

“We know that Bayern Munich have spoken to Erik ten Hag’s agent about potentially, if he were to leave Manchester United, going over to the Allianz Arena,” Mark McAdam said on the “Need to know” programme.

“There’s been no formal talks with Erik ten Hag. His situation is very simple. He just wants to focus on Manchester United at the moment.”

“We know there are a number of other clubs, should Ten Hag leave Manchester United, that would be interested in the Dutchman.”

As the noose tightens around Ten Hag’s neck at Old Trafford, his being lined up by one of the world’s biggest clubs might certainly play on INEOS’ mind and make them consider what they are losing if they were to sack him.

However, that might be exactly what Vos wants and it may be that the leaked story has come from the agent’s end in an effort to control the narrative about his client’s future.

In truth, Bayern are floundering, having already been turned down by Xabi Alonso, Julian Nagelsmann and, most surprisingly of all, Rangnick. It may be that one of the most coveted positions in world football is seen as something of a poison chalice, although that is unlikely to deter Ten Hag.

Meanwhile, rumours are rampant of United themselves sounding out potential successors to the former Ajax boss. Ironically, Thomas Tuchel, who will leave Bayern at the end of the season, is reportedly on the shortlist.

And in yet another German connection, the Red Devils have reportedly opened talks with former national team boss, Hansi Flick, over potentially replacing Ten Hag.
