Manchester United travelled to South London to face Crystal Palace on Monday night and returned with a negative-three-goal differential as well as plenty of question marks on Erik ten Hag’s project.

Man United’s defence and midfield were nothing short of embarrassing, seemingly doing little to stop Palace’s attackers from driving toward their goal and rattling the net four times.

Still, do not let their performance take the spotlight away from United’s toothless frontline, which appeared clueless in the absence of Bruno Fernandes.

At this point, everyone agrees that a new goal-scorer needs to be high on INEOS’ summer shopping list.

However, a report from Germany suggests United may struggle to get their long-term attacking target Benjamin Sesko, owing to the value of his release clause rising ahead of the summer transfer window.

In April, the Peoples Person relayed a report claiming RB Leipzig would be open to facilitating the 20-year-old striker’s exit. It read:

“The €50m (£42m) release clause in Sesko’s current contract may not need to be activated in order for him to leave, with Leipzig open-minded about the structure of any deal providing that ballpark valuation is met.”

According to Sky Sport Germany journalist Philipp Hinze, the Slovenian’s price tag could change, but in the opposite direction to what United or his other suitors would prefer.

The journalist states that due to Sesko’s impressive performance in the second half of the campaign, his release clause has risen to €65m. The young talent has scored five goals in his last five Bundesliga appearances.

It is thought that his release clause is dependent on many factors, including game time, goals, and assists. Hinze claims that “in the maximum case, the sum can rise to €70m-€75m.”

To make matters worse, AC Milan have also joined the race for his signature, as they look to replace Olivier Giroud.

According to Calciomercato, apart from Sesko, the Italian giants are also monitoring Bologna talisman Joshua Zirkzee, another United transfer target.

Manchester United head to Selhurst Park with hopes of returning back to winning ways and inject some excitement into the concluding phase of their season.

With Champions League football out of sight and even Europa League qualification seeming unlikely, the majority of Man United fans can not wait for the league campaign to end. All the focus, for now, is on the FA Cup final and Ineos’ plans for the next term.

In that regard, some United fans may monitor the Crystal Palace outing closely for Michael Olise, who has reportedly attracted serious interest from Ineos ahead of the summer transfer window.

Many see Olise as a perfect right winger to replace Antony, who has endured a frustrating 2023/24 season. The outing in South London will also provide the Brazilian the opportunity to show he is capable of manning United’s right flank.

The 24-year-old registered his first Premier League goal of the season only last weekend, capitalising on Burnley’s mistake in the last quarter of the game to put United ahead at Old Trafford.

Apart from Antony’s goal, another rare sight was a Sonic the Hedgehog toy involvement during celebrations.

After calmly placing the ball past Arjianet Muric and into the back of the net, Antony celebrated the goal by tucking the ball underneath his shirt. He then went on to grab the stuffed toy from a photographer before holding it high.

Explaining the move, the former Ajax star told MUTV: “I’m really happy to be able to score and dedicate it to my wife and my daughter, who is on her way. She arrives in the world next month, in good health we hope.”

“The Sonic celebration is because my son really likes Sonic. I told my friend to bring Sonic in his bag in case I scored, as I had a feeling I was going to score. It was for me to get Sonic and dedicate it to my son as he is a big fan.”

The United number 21 has been so disappointing going forward this season that not many expected him to open his account against Burnley.

As such, one cannot help but applaud his confidence to actually prepare for such an intricate celebration beforehand.

The United faithful will hope Antony can build on this and play against Palace with even more confidence and swagger.

Manchester United’s dire run during the business end of the season has ended their hopes of securing Champions League football for next season.

Further, the way Newcastle and Chelsea have picked up their respective forms, Man United may end the season without any European football for the 2024/25 campaign.

This has naturally brought Erik ten Hag under the spotlight, with many raising questions about his pedigree to lead the Red Devils. At the same time, many star players have also come under scrutiny for their inconsistent performances.

Andre Onana is one of them, with many doubting the former Inter Milan goalkeeper’s ability to replace long-time servant David de Gea between the sticks from day one.

The Cameroon international has not helped his case by switching off many times in between action, leading to many errors directly leading to goals.

In United’s most recent outing against Burnley, Onana rushed out of his area and fouled Zeki Amdouni, leading to the visitors’ 87th-minute equaliser from the spot.

Reflecting on his performance, Onana told MUTV: “Well, it’s not only this weekend. It’s the whole season, it has been a difficult season for all of us as an individual, and as a group. But, um, we always have to stay positive because I don’t think we lost the place, the place in Europe against Burnley.

“You know, and we all have to take responsibility. I start with myself always. But, uh, it has been a difficult season.”

The former Ajax man went on to add that many factors have played a part in United’s current predicament, including injuries and bad luck. However, he added, “We are Manchester United,” and they cannot talk about such things.

Instead, Onana is keen on staying positive and making amends moving forward. His and United’s next challenge is Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The South London outfit are unbeaten in their last four league games. While the clash would provide Onana to show his quality, the fixture may also hand Ineos figures the opportunity to monitor Michael Olise closely.

The Palace winger has enjoyed a prolific 2023/24 campaign and is reportedly considered one of the main targets of United’s new decision-makers for this summer’s transfer window.
